Aloha

If that car hasn't already gone east yet, I am curios, Which train will carry it and will it be in revenue service as it travels?

Oh no, Did i just issue a challenge to the_traveler?

It's never been in revenue service before during its journey, and typically it would come and go on the SW Chief and the LSL.

Aloha

Unfortunately for the traveler the Super Dome is usually not in revenue service when it is moved cross country. :)

Which raises a good question Alan, why is it not in revenue service during its journeys especially on the LSL?Id sure like to ride in this instead of the so called lounges they run back east!

My understanding is that part of the dome is a café/bar area. Is this true? If it is, does that area operate as a café when the dome is in service? I would guess not, given that there's also an Amfleet I café on the train.

The Cafe/Bar area downstairs is not in service when the Dome car operates on the Adirondack. There is no commissary in Albany to stock it, nor a crew base in Albany to staff it, even if one wanted to do something about it. I don't know what happens when it is in service in the Surfliner Corridor.

Probably because they'd have to clean it and supervise it. And in the case of the SW Chief, they'd have to allow passengers to walk through the sleepers and the Trans/dorm in order to actually access the car.

This is probably just me being a bit over-cautious, but I went to book Port Kent to Montreal round trip and could find absolutely no mention of the dome car anywhere on Amtrak's site or in Google/Google News. Are we sure they are running it and Trains is not mistaken? I would just think that Amtrak would announce it to the public somewhere - I just can't find a reference anywhere. I'd call them, but I'm at work at the moment...

It is running and will start on October 1st out of Albany. It is too early to do a press release or a media alert. That will be done as the date gets closer. The media have short term memories and deal with things like this only a few days out.

Alright, I'm trusting you! In that case, I'm going to get those tickets booked before the general public finds out about this!

Remember the Dome is "first come , first served" and is not reserved. The Dome is added to the consist in ALB, after the train has traveled from NYP.

Last year I had no problem finding a seat in the Dome car. Most people on the train didn't particularly seem to care that there was a Dome car. There were always seats available in the dome throughout the journey out and back. Of course the crowd on the train some other day may behave quite differently.

Of course before getting to Rouse's Point everyone will get evicted from the Dome, and if the train crew is in a good mood then they might let you back into it after Cantic. They did let me get back to the Dome after Cantic and for the rest of the journey there were precisely three of us in the Dome all the way to Montreal. Most others who were in the Dome before Rouse's Point did not come back after Cantic, partly because many disembarked at Rouse's Point and others were simply feeling too lazy I suppose.

Aloha

When? Where? How? :p

But if it doesn't go to BHM first on the Crescent, I'll pass! It would cost too many AGR points! (Oh - "Revenue Service" means I'd have to spend money! Not interested! :p )

Say it ain't so! SAY IT AIN'T SO!

Neither wind, rain or snow can keep the Mail Man from his appointed rounds, but a few greenbacks keeps Traveler off a train? I can't believe it! I just can't belive it!! The HORROR; The HUMANITY!!! :(

I never use greenbacks (greenfronts - maybe, if I use American Express  ) - I prefer plastic. Mostly the AGR MasterCard of course! :D Besides, that way I never have to pay for the charges! (I only wish they would stop sending those letters! It gets in the way of my planning my next trip - using AGR points! :p )

Guess you missed the announcement (think you were on the train! )that AGR and AGR MC were joining together and starting a co-ordinated operation with security forces in all train stations to catch "deadbeats" that hadnt paid their MC bills and that had caused the profitability of the AGR contractor to tank due to the increased workload on their staff posting bonus points and making awards for some outlaw from Rhode Island and Portland,Oregon! :p

With all the problems I've been have in dealing with occurances where points have not been posted, I'd have to conclude that what you are saying Jim, is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth... so help me Traveler! :D  :D
