Did he think that the train was going to swerve out of the way?

Condolences to the crew & passengers.

I took 546 home from work last night and it was crowded with passengers, but only delayed about 10 minutes due to passenger loading/unloading. 546 detoured around using the Coast Sub (forget the exact name) instead of the Niles Sub and skipped Fremont and Hayward stations. Train 544 ran about 30-40 minutes behind train 546 after being cleared from the incident.

We were notified where I work by the Alameda County Sheriff Department (also our Police Services contractor) regarding the incident so we could detour our services around it. Took around 2 hours to investigagte and clear.

Technical aspects aside, the location of the accident is within a Block of San Lorenzo High School and there have been a few close calls as far as I recall in the area. Education about the dangers and putting up fencing can only do so much. At the end of the day, teenagers will be teenagers. Sorry to say, but at least it was an accident. Made me think back to the Peninsula a few years back where high school students started a trend of committing suicide in front of Caltrain trains at one particular location by their school. Even with the increase in signs, fencing, and education, it became the "cool" thing to do. Thankfully the trend has since vanished.

I thought it was also Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office - at least where I live. I understand the duties are shared, unlike San Mateo County Sheriff which has a contract and the authority to patrol the entire Caltrain service area.

I used to work in downtown Berkeley, and that area around the Berkeley BART station got crazy at times. I remember a particular bus stop where a lot of people would drop off or pick up passengers and even wait. All that despite the sign saying there was a $250 fine. Once I heard one deputy yell out that someone had to move. The driver wouldn't budge and I'm guess he gave out a ticket.

Haha... not to stay OT for too long but you are correct. Contracts with Alameda and Contra Costa Sheriff depending on the county. Outside of those areas (such as Milpitas, Palo Alto, San Mateo, San Francisco) it falls with the local Police Department. And I've been assigned to Center/Shattuck the past week and a half... can't say how many people have picked-up and dropped off illegally. I respond to calls with them to take reports from everything from vandalism and theft to fare evasion and passenger disturbances. Do the accident reporting as well which unfortunately can sometimes include fatal accidents. I mean with a bus there is a little leverage to move out of the way but we have had people commit suicide by bus before. I can't even put into words what it is like talking to that operator after and having them try to reason out what they just went through. Can't imagine what it would be like for an engineer as you can't steer or brake harder... all you can do is watch.

To bring it back to trains... San Mateo County Sheriff covers both Samtrans (Bus) and Caltrain (Train) throughout their Service Areas. They are a big part of checking the Caltrain right-of-way for trespassers and educating the public. We often read the stories of the fatalities but hear little about the "saves" that those deputies do. I once was riding in the front end on Caltrain and we were called by radio regarding a possible individual laying across the tracks in Redwood City. The Sheriff talked them out by the time we arrived but if they were not there on patrol it might have had a different ending.

:giggle: Good one. I feel sorry for the engineer who I am sure has a feeling of guilt and the kids parents who are going through grief but it is just plain stupid to play on tracks.

There was an article on that last year:

Caltrain track patrols help halt suicides

Every time one of these stories gets posted, there is a slew of blame the victim comments. Everyone knows the folly, why is it necessary to add insult to the ultimate injury? Not one note of compassion for the the deaths. After all, Darwin would have gotten rid of them anyway. Well guess what, they have families and friends who mourn their loss and don't have your intellectual and moral superiority. May you never need anyone's compassion.

Thats the best comment of the thread. It's the crew that suffers the most.
Oh Yeah that is the best comment, and no one could possibly be suffering except for the crew. I can't believe I just read that. It's fine to be pro Amtrak, it's crossing the border into being a sociopath to worry more for who is left alive. What , you don't have enough soul to care for both the victims and the survivors?

I don't think victim actually means what you seem to think it means.

Not one note of compassion for the the deaths.
You are free to show and promote as much compassion as you please. Just as the rest of us are allowed to judge as criticize as much as we please.

Well guess what, they have families and friends who mourn their loss and don't have your intellectual and moral superiority. May you never need anyone's compassion.
There are more safeguards for the ignorant today than at any other time in all of human history. These days it takes a concerted effort to kill yourself. If I ever end up hit by a train through my own doing please do not waste your compassion on my efforts.

It's fine to be pro Amtrak, it's crossing the border into being a sociopath to worry more for who is left alive.
Once again I don't think sociopath means what you seem to think it means.

I totally get your point of view. Really. But teenagers playing on train tracks is stupid. When people drive drunk and get into terrible accidents do I feel sorry them? Yes I'm sorry that they were stupid enough to do something illegal, and dangerous. I'm sorry for anyone who dies, every life is important.

But I do indeed feel worse for the poor train crew (don't forget the conductors who have to walk the train... I don't think I could stomach that). The crew was just doing their job. They will never be the same. The teenager was knowingly doing something dangerous and life risking.

You must be kidding. This "victim" made a choice. The family, friends, engineer, crew and passengers weren't given the opportunity to sway, persuade or dissuade the choice. This wasn't a victim. It was a person who made a decision that impacted not only his/her own life, but many others as well. Selfishly. May the compassion and outpouring of love be shared with the true victims.

The most dangerous thing I did near tracks when I was young was to put pennies on the rail well before a train would come.
Ha! Me too, at least until my brother, who was attending MSU in East Lansing, MI at the time, got arrested, (charges later dropped) for doing the same, and "defacing US currency".

While MOST of the time I agree with the Darwin-comments, when it involves teenagers, it is hard to swallow.

And yes, the crew and parents suffer the most. I was in cab, (not at throttle) when a motorcyclist decided to try and beat the train. He lost, INSTANTLY.

The sad fact is, "teenagers will be teenagers" and sometimes with deadly results. Bet his friends will be rail-safety concious for the rest of their lives, having experienced that horror.

On Thursday, my grandma and I were riding back from Sacramento on the last San Jose departure of the night, at 5:40. When we were in Richmond, I saw on the electronic signs that train 544 was delayed due to trespasser incident, and I knew what that meant. I didn't tell my grandma, or the woman seated with us, because it was her first time and I didn't want to worry either of them. When we departed Emeryville, the conductors came onboard and announced that all Hayward and Fremont passengers were to get off at Oakland Jack London and be taxied to the destination stations at Amtrak's expense. We left Jack London on time, arrived at the Coliseum 4 minutes early, and then after dropping off pax, we backed up for about a mile, then pulled forward again on a different track and sat on the one third-closest to the platform for about 20 minutes. We had to wait for a northbound CC to come up the CS route, then pulled south and even though we didn't depart the Coliseum area until 8:10 or so, we arrived in San Jose at 8:59, only 1 minute after scheduled departure. A few non-related things I noticed on the trip were just how funny it seemed to me to see 4-car trains again. I grew up seeing 4-car Coasters and 4 and 5 car Surfliners, but in recent years all Coaster trains have moved up to 5 or 6 cars and the Surfliners are predominantly 6 cars now. More than half the CC consists seemed to be 4. In addition, it was strange to see the old, in-need-of-repair café on the lower level of the Superliner on the way home. On the way up to SAC, it was on top, as I had expected, and I liked the layout, although that car eats up much more space than the Surfliner one. It was odd to me that I could not get my own food, but, it is what it is. In addition, two doors on the train did not open by pushing either button. After I alerted a conductor, he used brute force to open it, and then locked it open so that pax could move unimpeded into the café. The SAC station walk truly was not that inconvenient and yes while it adds three minutes to getting to the train, they made the trains available for boarding at up to 20 mins before departure so it was of no concern. The new 6 tracks through the station inc. 2 bypass tracks are vastly improved from what seemed like 3 from the old arrangement.

A sociopath doesn't care about anybody and lacks moral conscience. Their behavior is antisocial and often criminal, with no regard for the victims whatsoever. I wouldn't compare someone who says, "Wow, I feel bad for the parents," to someone like Hannibal Lecter. That's a bit of a reach.

Teen Dies Playing Chicken With Trains: Tragedy Strikes San Lorenzo High School (VIDEO, PHOTO)

The student community at San Lorenzo High School has been shocked by his tragic death, and have commented that he will be remembered as a kind, caring and sweet boy who always put others before himself.
No, he'll be remembered as a kid who got killed playing chicken with an Amtrak train.

A "kind, caring and sweet boy who always put others before himself" doesn't create a tragedy for the crew and passengers of an Amtrak train.

I don't buy this "teenagers will be teenagers" nonsense. I'm only in my 20's and I never remember doing anything like that. I'm sure some of my "friends" did... But I can't imagine being that stupid.

Teenagers need to be taught by their parents when they are little kids that there is a consequence to everything they do. Yes I am blaming the parents. The surviving kids should all be arrested for trespassing as well. Yes arrested, as put in jail. That's my opinion.

My prayers for ALL involved. The crew wasn't doing anything wrong, and it's sad that they had this experience. It's also very sad when someone pays for a dumb mistake with his or her LIFE. (We've all done a few dumb things.) While I don't feel the same as MM does about those posting here, I do share her feelings for the teenager and those who care about him. Mercy, folks.

In the 90s ( gosh I am sounding OLD now . I totally remember operation lifesaver and in fact I have the ruler I got from it some where in my childhood keepsakes box.. .I did a ton of crazy things when I was a teen ,..., playing with Amtrak roulette is not one of them ..
