I am assisting a friend with an itinerary from Tampa to Palm Springs. This will will be on an AGR redemption. From what I understand choosing the correct sleeper car is critical on the Texas Eagle to/from California. Can someone please confirm that car 2130 should be chosen on the westbound trip and 2230 should be chosen on the eastbound trip.

Unfortunately I don't have an answer for you... and excusing my ignorance, but why do you perceive this criticality [assuming there is something that I don't know to be learned here]?

I assume you are talking about the Texas Eagle Chicago-Palm Springs.

If so, don't worry about the car number ... book the correct train number: 421 Westbound, 422 Eastbound.

Yes Dovecote, you need to be sure that you book the correct train number; not a car number. You want the Train 421 sleeper. The 2130 car is a train #21 sleeper and will dump your friend in the San Antonio station for the night.

gmushial,

If Dovecote were to book train #21, then the person would have to get off the train in San Antonio and board train #1 later that night to continue their trip west. If they book train #421, then they can remain in their seat/bed fast asleep and the car is cut off the Eagle and attached to the Sunset when it arrives.

Make sure you book the train that goes from Chicago to LA, I believe there is only one sleeper that runs the whole length. As has been said, YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE YOU book 421/422 and that when she gets to the train, that she makes sure that the sleeper she is on is actually the one that goes on thru to LA. Also make sure she knows that she will be on the train for an extra night going all the way form CHI to Palm Springs.

The "train" that goes thru is 421/422 only. The actual sleeper number is 2130 and 2230, but if you book 421/422 you'll get them. You can book 21/1 or 2/22, but as said you have to leave the train at SAS and wait for boarding of the other train. If you book 421/422, those cars are automatically switched between trains for you.

Gents, yet again: many thanks. I hadn't considered the cutting cars in or out situation, and had read the OP's post as a special insider information or maybe even metaphysical question w/re this car to be on vs which on not to be on - but was thinking in the context of something like the CZ where the whole consist goes from one end to the other. Yet again: many thanks for the clarification. :)

So in conclusion, the key point in making this reservation is to request train #421 (westbound) and train #422 (eastbound). With this request, the sleeper car assignment will be 2130 (wb) and 2230 (eb). Thanks for these responses.
