City of New Orleans, Trains 58 & 59

This daily service from Chicago will continue to terminate and originate in Memphis through September 6, rather than New Orleans, with no service on this route in Mississippi and Louisiana. Further adjustments are pending between Memphis and New Orleans.

(this was just posted on Amtrak's website. I'm not sure what they mean by "further adjustments are pending" but I wonder if they are going to try to start turning somewhere south of Mphs while waiting for the line to NOLA to be restored.)

We are scheduled for trip from Jackson to new Orleans on Friday the 7th. The site says CONO is suspended for the memphi- NO until the 6th. Hopefully we won't need rental car but it's starting to look that way. Guess we will find out Friday. It was going to be the last leg of our trip from the north. Doh!

Brian, I would go ahead and give Amtrak a call 1-800-872-7245, speak to an Agent there, and they will be able to update you on the status of 59 for Friday. I notice that the agents seem to be quicker than the website when it comes to updates. At least that was my experience when i called yesterday. As far as Train 58 goes, I was told that we are departing on the 7th on time. So maybe 59 might too?

Id call Amtrak to be sure.

Anthony

Thanks, I'll give them a call tomorrow and get some info. Worst comes to worst we will drive but we were looking forward to a good old fashion train ride.

I hope you do get to take the train ride, its definitely a fun way to travel. If you dont get to take the train, I still hope that you have a safe trip as well.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Train 58 for September 7th cancelled. Anyone booked on this train for this date may call the Reaccomodation Desk at 877-231-9448.

I have rebooked my Outbound portion of my trip, to the Crescent for Saturday September 8th, NOL to NYP and the best part is, Amtrak is going to honor my sleeper and gave me a sleeper on the Crescent at no extra charge!!!!

Danielle was such a big help. I still get to take my trip, and I get a refund on the Chicago to Syracuse LSL segment. $62.05.

Im so excited.

Anthony

I forgot to add, that my return trip is still in tact, its just the outgoing journey that I had to change.

I hope that other people will get reaccomodated as easily as I was. Im still shocked that I was given that sleeper for no charge. I guess they figured giving me the sleeper was easier than having to give me a refund.

Im excited that I still get to take my trip and that I dont have to break my girlfriend's heart by saying I had to cancel the trip. I have been waiting a long time for this.Amtrak really did a great job, thats why I ride *and am proud of* Amtrak.

My guess is that's code for "we have no idea what's going to happen next." I mean, a "further adjustment" could certainly be a short-term bustitution south of Memphis. I'm not aware of any

storm-related highway closures that would prevent that from happening. Seems like that should be an option for people who need to travel south of Memphis.

Cool!

Here's hoping service is fully restored in time for your return trip.

Fairview, I hope so as well. Im sure Amtrak will take good care of me again if something should happen. My return trip starts out of Syracuse on the 13th, and so I will be connecting with 59 in Chicago on the 14th. So hopefully yes, by the 14th, the CONO is up and running again.

By the way guys, I apologize if it sounded like I was bragging earlier about the rebooking, I was just so excited about the reaccomodation.

New question now that Im rerouted. Whats the best way to get from NY Penn to NY Port Authority bus terminal? This will be my first time into NY Penn station.

I know about the subway *but im leary*, especially since ill have a big roller case with me.

I guess I should take a taxi instead with my luggage?

It's 7 blocks, if you come out of the correct exit of Penn Station. Walk it, as long as it's not raining.

Use the exit to the right side of the Amtrak ticket windows. That will put you on the corner of 8th Avenue and 33rd Street. Walk north on 8th Avenue to 40th Street. And at some point you'll also have to cross 8th Avenue.

I could try the subway too, its only 2 bucks or so and port authority is the next stop down. so it would be quicker than walking. Yes, I did my research haha. Plus, the subway is protected from the weather. I can stay dry all the way to Port Authority. I watched a couple of vids on youtube of how to do it, and really it doesnt look that hard.

When I get to NYP, Ill wave at you Alan lol. Thanks for the advice sir.

Anthony

The Subway is $2.25 per rider. And by the time you get a Metrocard to pay your fare, wait for the train, and get in and out of the stations; you could walk it faster.

However, if it is raining, then I'd highly recommend the subway. Of if you just want the experience.

By the way, why didn't Amtrak book you a train from NYP to Syracuse? Then you'd have no need of a bus.

I guess I should mention that I am blind in my left eye, so that does make walking a bit more challenging, especially in cities like NYC.

I will check the weather once I get to NYP, if its nice out, Ill walk it most likely, but if its raining, then Ill take the subway. I guess it depends on how I feel once i get off of the Crescent as well.

Lots of factors to consider. Im excited though, and Im looking forward to new rail mileage, and new experiences along the way.

Ive done alot of solo traveling, one bad eye never stops me. Hehe. In the words of Bilbo Baggins from Lord of The Rings. "Im quite ready for another adventure!"

Well, Id still have to bus from SYR to Binghamton *which is where my girlfriend is picking me up*

Once I hit NYP, Ill be bussing it from there to Binghamton..but my return trip back through Chicago and New Orleans, starts in Syracuse. The extra train time from NYP to SYR would have been longer than the bus ride from NYP to Binghamton.

See, originally, I was gonna do NOL-CHI-SYR-Binghamton...and flip it for the reverse. Well, I left my return trip in tact. BInghamton-SYR-CHI-NOL. I only changed my outbound trip. Now Im going NOL-NYP-Binghamton.

Sorry for the confusion guys. Hopefully this explanation helps.

Glad to see having only one eye doesn't slow you down! I too am blind in my left eye and I don't let it stop me either. Only that nasty work thing and lack of unlimited money does. :(

I guess if we ever meet, we'll have to be careful; we may not see eye to eye on things!!!!!

Bad, I know, but who wants to go through life crying when you can laugh through it instead! :p

Latest update on amtrak.com indicates CONO operates Chgo-Mphs only through September 7th.

Latest update on Canadian National website says as follows:

CN is currently continuing repair work along the McComb sudivision between Manchac and Skip, LA. We continue to serve the New Orleans area by detouring related traffic over the Baton Rouge subdivision of the CN main line. According to current estimates, service will be restored along the McComb subdivision by end of day Thursday, September 06th, with some delays expected until Sunday, September 09th.

Hmm, I guess I'll call Amtrak later today and see what's up. Sounds like its partially going? Id rather switch to a bus part way rather than have to get a rental car.

Here's the latest from Amtrak:

City of New Orleans train to planned to operate south of Memphis on September 10September 5, 2012

3:00 p.m. CT

Amtrak service between Chicago and New Orleans via Memphis will resume September 10, following a suspension of service due to Hurricane/Tropical Storm Isaac. Other Amtrak routes to and from New Orleans from Los Angeles (Sunset Limited, Trains 1 & 2) and New York (Crescent, Trains 19 & 20) have previously been restored.

City of New Orleans, Trains 58 & 59

This daily service from Chicago will terminate and originate in Memphis, rather than New Orleans, with no service on this route in Mississippi and Louisiana, through September 9. CN owns, controls and maintains most of the City of New Orleans route and Amtrak appreciates CN’s work to reopen the tracks for Amtrak trains, effective with the departure from Chicago on September 9 and in both directions on September 10.
