So, it is time, I start my travelogue for the gathering, before I totally forget the fine details.

DAY 1 (And a little of pre-day 1)

It started off at 11:30PM on a cold Friday night in Toledo. Heavy winds and very cold air. I waited inside the station until the train was approaching.

Surprisingly, the 29 was right on time. Exactly as my phone clock changed to 11:39PM, the Capitol Limited was pulling into the station. I was amused at the timing, and excited for the trip. I got to my car, and two women got off the train, asking "Where is the station" (Which was right in front of them). I assume they came from my roomette, since the train was sold out.

I boarded the train, and the SCA quickly changed the sheets. I put my luggage in, but realized it was a Superliner I, that had a closet. I had to put my luggage at the end of my bed (I don't like putting the top bunk down, since I usually hit my head in the morning) and curled up and went to sleep.

Side Story from before I went to bed: I went to get my pajamas out of my bag, and my zipper broke. So, now my overstuffed bag is now about to burst open and has no zipper.

I woke up about 7 AM. I headed off to breakfast, and had the omelette, one of my only choices because of my gluten allergies. I don't seem to remember having very much of a conversation with the people across from me, besides the fact that they said all the food on the trains is the same, and I agreed.

I headed back to my car and fell back asleep. I did not see my SCA until he woke me up at 12 PM to tell me to step out so he could put my room into day-time configuration before we got into Washington. I sleepily stepped out, and waited until he changed everything. I got back into my room and relaxed and enjoyed the scenery as Washington approached.

I got to DC, and disembarked from the train. I was careful to make sure nothing was spilling out of my bag. I got to Club Acela, met with Shanghai, and we went to go get a new bag. I got a new one, put the old one in the new one, and we went to Johnny Rockets.

I got the Route 66 burger (with no bun of course) and some fries, with a chocolate shake. I love the atmosphere and nostalgia of Johnny Rockets, and unfortunately for me the Johnny Rocket's near me all shut down due to the owner not paying taxes. The closest one for me is inside of an amusement park (seasonal, and 60 dollars to get in) and 2 hours away. I thoroughly enjoyed my food.

We rode the metro from Union Station to NoMA, and we got to the hotel. I dropped my bags off, Shanghai decided to rest, and I went off to explore a bit. It was already 3:30P, so I had missed the group meeting at Crystal City. I took the metro to the mall and explored some of Union Station, and then got back at around 8:30PM. I looked up hockey games in the area, and decided to go to the Capitals game the next night. Shanghai told me that Jebr wanted to go on a MARC ride with someone, so I volunteered.

I met Jebr in the lobby of the hotel, and we walked to Union Station. We purchased our MARC tickets for 9:30P departure to New Carrollton. We got on the MARC, and headed up to the single level car, which when we first started talking, did not realize it was the quiet car. While we were riding, the conductor came through yelling "TURN ON YOUR MARKER LIGHTS!" and opened the door to the locomotive, she sat there for a bit yelling the same thing until she closed the door and walked back.

We got to New Carrollton and rode the Orange Line all the way to Metro Center (We wanted to transfer at Stadium-Armory to the Silver, then the Red at Metro Center, but Stadium Armory was having power issues) and then transferred to the Red Line back to NoMA. We both went to the 7-Eleven, then I decided to go to McDonald's, and Jebr went to the hotel. I got some fries, and then got back to the hotel, and fell asleep shortly afterwards.

DAY 2 (COMING SOON, Hopefully Tonight or tomorrow)

Thanks for the travel tale Tyler!

I lived in D.C. for 15 years to 2000 and for the life of me could not figure out what you meant by going to "NoMa"! I figured you were referring to a Metro stop but I was clueless! Admittedly I spent much of those years as a drunk (Got sober there and moved to Manhattan)--but was I that out of it?

Well several Google searches led me to a "NoMa" Wikipedia page: The station was inserted (they use the term "infill") between the Union Sta and Rhode Island Ave stops on the Red Line. Not opened until after 2004 and not named "NoMa" --North of Mass. Ave--until 2011: "NoMa-Gallaudette U". Boy I'm sure I wouldn't recognize the area now--it was a rough area back then.

Awaiting more of your report!

So that's what you were up to before the rest of us met you! :p I'm glad you had a good trip, and it was a delight to meet you! :)Looking forward to the rest of your trip report. :)

Did someone give you a hard time, or were there just signs? No quiet cars on the weekends. :D
I've never had anyone say anything to me on a weekend commuter rail ride anywhere, but I've gotten many angry shushings from commuters on peak trains (primarily LIRR), thoughI wasn't screaming and I was many cars away from the quiet car. It must be an unpleasant introduction for new riders...

This was on Friday night, so while the weekend for most people it was not Saturday or Sunday, so technically not the weekend.

Before I forget it all.

The second day was amazing. It started with a good breakfast (had an omelette) with Alan, Alan's mother, and Shanghai.

Once we were finished, we headed back to our rooms with intent to meet up to go to the Metro station.

Around 9 AM we went down to the metro station together and caught up with Jis. We met a few others at the NoMA Station. We then took the Red Line to Union station where we met with the rest. Me and a few other AU'ers went down to Johnny Rockets, where I enjoyed a route 66 burger (with no bun) and a chocolate milkshake. Honestly, Johnny Rocket's was my favorite place to eat there. I love the atmosphere and nostalgia of Johnny Rocket's, and ever since they shut down around me, I had been craving it.

We then met at the Acela Lounge where we boarded the Acela.

Shanghai and I both got first class. We were riding to Baltimore, so we asked to be served food as soon as possible (politely, of course).

First class was very nice and the food was very good. I took home the pepper shaker and gave Ryan the salt shaker. I was looking at it and could not figure out why it was shaped so weird until I held it up to the Acela logo on my glass. I felt like an idiot!

We arrived at Baltimore, and the rest of the group (sans Shanghai and I) went to go ride the local light rail.

Shanghai and I had another idea. We were going to ride a Northeast Regional back to DC, then take the Silver Star to Alexandria, then catch the Carolinian back.

The Northeast Regional arrived, and to my delight, an ACS-64 was pulling it. (I started foaming). We rode that back and got back just in time for the Silver Star.

We waited in the Silver Star until they changed the locomotive to a P42, then rode it to Alexandria. That is when I found out that Anderson was riding the Carolinian. We decided to meet up in the cafe car.

When Shanghai and I caught the Carolinian back, we met with Anderson in the cafe. We had a very good talk and had some good ideas. We finally got kicked out by the conductor as we were about to pull into Union Station.

At that point, Shanghai and I went back to the hotel. I decided to go to see the National Mall and took the metro there. I saw the Fallen Police Officer's memorial, found the name of a local police officer, and walked down to the mall. I found out that it was getting ready for a big march so I decided to go back to the hotel, and on the way back I thought about going to the Capitals game.

Later, we rode to Union Station to meet at the pub for a very good dinner. We met the other Amtrak Unlimited members and had a blast. I had to leave early, due to the game starting at 7, but I wish I could of stayed longer. I walked by myself to Union Station and took the Red Line to Chinatown. I got off and went into the Verizon Center, where I experienced the Season Opener for the Washington Capitals.

The atmosphere was electric and the game was great. Ovechkin made an amazing goal and Holtby did great in net. The score was 6-2 I believe.

I then took the Red Line back to NoMA and stopped at the Mcdonald's on the way back. I then went to the hotel room and went to bed.
