Can I assume that when I take my round trip ABQ ~ SAN journey (Tuesday 12/20 -- Thursday 12/29) Amtrak will be packed full of folks?

Well it is the holidays, but I am not familiar with that specific route so I will let some more knowledgeable folks answer it. But my guess would be yes.

These days I tend to assume all Amtrak trains are packed until I hear otherwise. Even the bottom-rung LD trains are pretty busy these days. Things I never had to worry about in the past, like finding a seat in the lounge or locating my carry-on luggage, have become a bit more tedious over the past few years. But this is the sort of thing that we've always said we wanted so it wouldn't make much sense to complain about it when it finally arrives.

The 20th maybe not so much; but expect the 29th to be very busy.

Things generally start ramping up around the 19th/20th depending on where the holiday falls within the week, building to sold out by the 22nd/23rd. Christmas is generally light, but then things remain busy until the 2nd/3rd of Jan.
