Today the last of September, 6 weeks to the day that I left Nottingham clutching my free bus pass...

Just as I was about to leave the Cortez motel, I met a couple of Aussie guys who were touring on non-Harley motorbikes. They had bought them second hand in the US. Both had been here 3 months and were mixing camping out with the occasional motel night, and having a great time.

I decided to head up to Grand Junction, and was very pleased with my choice.

A cool morning again as I headed north on 145, following the Delores river valley between some high wooded mountains. It suddenly reminded me of a place in India, the Kulu valley, where I had been 30 years ago.

I could see mountains in the distance that had a cap of snow, and eventually I reached the Lizard Head Pass, and a few tiny flakes of snow drifted down onto me as I stood shivering and trying to take photos.

It was 37F at that height, and reached 67F later in the afternoon. A bright start and finish to the day, with heavy clouds mid journey.

I had imagined that after yesterdays superb scenery I would not expect much today, but I was wrong. Once again, a photo opportunity around every corner. Loved seeing the snowy mountains, such a contrast, and feeling just a few snow flakes, and then the red rocks appeared again on the San Miguel section of river. Stunning!

If anyone is feeling jaded, I can recommend this route 145/141 to bring a little joy into your soul... Then again, each day has been uplifting with vivid scenery.

If you get the opportunity, there is "Shelf Road" between Cripple Creek and Canyon City in Colorado. It's a breathtaking drive similar to the one you have posted above - only no paved road.

Ooops. I just realized your rental stated "No Unpaved Roads". Oh well...

I guess your pass through New Mexico is over? Or do you plan to go return the car back in Arizona? South Colorado has the famous Silverton & Durango Railroad as well as the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad. Both are part of the same Denver & Rio Grande narrow gauge, but they aren't connected any more. There's about 50 miles between the two railroads. I have not had the opportunity to ride either, but my understanding is that the Silverton is more touristy and the Cumbres is more rustic. There's also the Georgetown Loop Railroad right off of I-70 in the middle of the Rockies. Anyway, back to New Mexico. If you have the chance to go back through NM, (perhaps from one of the above mentioned railroads) you may want to visit Taos - similar to Santa Fe, but without all the fame.

From the Cumbres & Toltec Railroad, head East on CO-17 to Antonito, CO. Turn right and go South on US-285 to Tres Piedres and make a left on US-64. Then head towards Taos. One thing that struck me when I was on this road was out in the middle of literally no where, there was a rest stop. Rest stops are common on Interstate highways, but not so much on US highways. By the time I got the words "What the heck" into my brain, I was flying 800 feet over the Rio Grande Gorge.

Quite amazing!

If at all possible, ride the C&TS FROM Chama to at least the hafl-way point Osier (where lunch will be served to all train passengers). Then either take the other train from Osier back to Chama, or continue on your original train to Antonito and take the connecting bus back to Chama. You will not be dissapointed with this trip, regardless of the weather.

Cheers for the replies and suggestions.

I am currently on my way to meet up with an A.U. member in Flagstaff, and stay over for a few days, then its back to Las Vegas with the car, and on to Emeryville to meet up with the "gathering" crowd...

Not decided where to after that... no change there!
