A friend sent me this photo. It looks like a Shasta Daylight locomotive with an Amtrak logo and paint scheme. What is it?

That locomotive was part of the freedom train in 1976. After that it pulled some Amtrak steam excursion in 1977. You can look up locomotive 4449 on Google for its history.

I think you're correct. UP 4449?

SP 4449. It is not owned by UP, never was owned by UP, and does not carry a UP number.

It is actually forbidden from operating on former SP lines now as UP will not let any steam engine operate over their lines other than the ones from their own steam program, like fellow 4-8-4 UP 844. When SP 4449 runs, it is over local shortlines and BNSF.
