Light-rail in Sacramento is having a rough week (again.)

First, on the morning of Friday 11/16, two pedestrians were struck by a light-rail train as they were trespassing over a crossing with fully-functioning and activated lights/bells/barricades. One pedestrian was a man in a wheelchair, the other was a woman who was pushing the wheelchair. Both were transients; the woman was killed when she was drug beneath the light-rail vehicle.

Story

Then, this morning (Sunday, 11/18) in downtown Sacramento, a semi-truck carrying almonds made an illegal left turn that cut off a light-rail train, resulting in a broadside collision. The train operator and two of the 65 passengers were taken to the hospital with non-serious injuries. The intersection where the collision occurred does not have barricades or traditional railroad warning devices (the trains are street-running at this point) but there are "light-bright" style warning signs that have flashing red and white symbols, instructing drivers that a left turn is illegal when a train is approaching. Witnesses have indicated that the signs were functioning and flashing when the collision took place.

Darwin awards for the transients in the first case, a nasty lawsuit and loss of a CDL for the truck driver in the second. Trying to play "beat the train" while pushing a wheelchair...well, it's special, that's for sure.
