Train speeds around San Diego

What would be the best way to increase train speed on Miramar Hill between La Jolla and Mission Bay? Trains have to slow to 20-30 mph there.

Bypass what can be bypassed, electrify, run EMUs. EMUs can handle grades better than diesel loco-hauled coaches and can accelerate much better as well.

Tunnel would save 10 - 15 minutes. Would need the requisite 2 bores thru earthquake territory. Expect the hill would need to be kept to allow for damage to tunnel and maybe a few LOSSAN trains might stop at a station top of the hill ?

If they could raise the speed in that section to 50 mph or bypass, that would cut los-san trip time by 20-30 minutes I bet.

Tunnel remains the plan, and the only viable plan. In the interim they added a second track to parts of it and softened some of the curves -- this is done -- which is as much as they can do without building the tunnel. Tunnel just hasn't been funded yet; they're still focusing on higher-priority areas like bypassing the collapsing Del Mar bluffs.
