"train status via text message"

In your FAQ section Mister Toad had nicely set up a system to allow for texts to let one know about the status of any Amtrak train. But I've seen no mention of it since the original thread posted in Sept. of '11.

We have hours to kill in KCY before embarking, and this would be helpful to us, to be able to know if the train was ontime or late (boarding the SWC, trip coming up in March). And we have stupidphones, and will not be traveling with any other connected devices, so a text notification would be perfect for us.

Is it still operational, does anyone know? I'm tempted to try it out tonight later, just to see.

Amtrak Status Maps has a great set up for texts.

There are two now:

41411 I believe is the one you're talking about.

The other is 1-800-872-7245

The message you send is station code & train # I think. It's been a while since I used either of them

I recently used the "Amtrak Status Maps" alert feature receiving each stations arrival/departure status via email (on my phone).
