Hi Everyone,
On Saturday, November 16, 2013 I got to Chicago's Union Station and waited in the Metropolitan lounge to board the California Zephyr to Reno. We boarded at 1:30 p.m. and left exactly at 2:00 p.m. My car attendant was Tony and he was fabulous. I had booked the handicap room as I am on oxygen and Tony made sure to bring all my meals. I never had to remind him it was time to eat. He was really great.
The scenery was fantastic, especially the second day through Colorado. I got a couple photos and then my camera battery died. I was very disappointed. While traveling in Colorado breathing became a little difficult due to the altitude. It was extremely noticeable at Moffat's Tunnel. I just sat and enjoyed the scenery. Eventually the altitude decreased some and it was more comfortable. We arrived in Reno a few minutes early on Monday, November 18, 2013.
I spent 3 nights at the Peppermill Casino in Reno and had a great time. However, I found the altitude to be an issue even in Reno. I was able to rent a scooter in the casino for the 3 days which helped.
My return trip I had Curtis as my car attendant. He also was fantastic. Again, I had the handicap room and Curtis took care of all my meals. Our return trip was delayed by freight traffic, a broken down freight and track work. We arrived in Chicago about 3 hours late. Curtis had a red cap waiting for me when we arrived in Union Station. Both gentlemen got well deserved tips.
I truly enjoyed this trip. It was my first time on the California Zephyr. Due to the altitude I am not sure I will do this trip again, but there are so many other wonderful routes still to explore.
Thanks for reading.
