has anyone ever taken a trip with entirely purchased points? for example, i could purchase 10k points from amtrak and 20k from starwood. two of us could travel roomette rt for the 30k points from, say, spk-abq at less than half the cost of the trip purchased through amtrak. granted you could only do this once a year purchasing through these two sources but it would still be a big savings. i have purchased points to "fill in" the rest of the total for a trip but never taken a trip totally on purchased points. do you think it is legit or is it taking advantage of the agr program?

I'm not sure they would be able to tell how you accumulated your points. Just on the practical side - if they looked at all AGR redemption tickets to see how the points were earned, it would be an enormous task.

AGR doesn't care where the points come from. I believe it actually helps them when points are redeemed through them from other sources. Definately check the terms through Starwood, though. If you purchase points directly from Continental, I don't believe they're able to be transferred. Check to see if Starwood has a similar policy. Assuming the transfer goes through, AGR won't care how you got them.

i just purchased some starwood points and they transferred one to one to agr in just a few days. was a good deal as the starpoints are currently on sale and cheaper than amtrak's buy points

Unless you're seeing something I'm not, I'm seeing them for $0.035 and 20% off, making them $0.028 per point, still a little more expensive than Amtrak's $0.0275 (although you do get around the 10,000 point annual limit this way).

Why not just set aside the limit for a while to boost sales and travel? Or do like agr did a few years back have a 20% of sale which allowed you to go further on less points.

DARN!

I missed it. The offer ended on 12/31/09. I knew I should have kept reading this forum while I was on vacation. Anyway, it was $28/1000 points instead of Amtrak's $27.50/1000. For 20,000 points, it would have been $10 more, but of course you could get 20K on top of Amtrak's 10K points. DARN!
