In times that I have ridden coach on the Amtrak CZ, I have often seen instances where a person traveling alone had purchased two seats. The conductor punched both tickets (this was in the days before e-tickets) and put two hat checks above the seat, both marked with the three-letter destination and the number "1". Of course, I never saw the train totally sold out so that someone was forced to sit in the empty seat next to the original purchaser.
