This morning in Burbank at 8:00 AM the Surfliner pulled into the Burbank Airport station. I almost did a double take. The entire train except for a trailing loco was in Amtrak livery, not Surfliner. All of the coaches were single level Amtrak cars being pulled by an Amtrak P42 loco. Only the trailing loco was different, it was in Cascades livery. For a second I thought an East Coast train had gotten lost. :giggle:

I believe that set is the regular standby set for when a full Surfliner set needs to be in for PM. I've seen pictures of it around on RP.net on an occasional basis.

Perhaps related to one or both of the two fatal surfliner incidents yesterday?

There is still one single-level trainset in the Surfliner rotation. There is not enough Surfliner equipment to operate the entire service with bi-level cars.

This has been the case since the early 2000s or so (whenever the second Surfliner LAX-SLO-LAX turn started), and the equipment now rotates through the entire route since the SLO-LAX train was extended to SAN a couple of years ago.

You'll see a single-level set in regular Surfliner service for a few more years, since the new cars are still a ways away.

There was a time a few years ago when I was regularly arriving at my office at about 8:00 -- right down the street from BUR -- and I'd almost always see the single-level set sitting in the station.

I did a short point run back in early December from Fullerton to Anaheim and back. On the southbound 572 the consist was as you described. It was a surprise to me to see and travel in this consist. Now I know it was not a fluke!
