Hi all, I just wanted to vent a bit about a potential disaster than might unfold this weekend. I'm traveling to EMY from DEN tomorrow, 12/12, and I managed to convince a bunch of friends and co-workers, most of who have never been on train before, to try it with me. We have 3 bedrooms and 1 roomette. Most of us are headed to a conference in San Francisco, although several people joined the trip for other reasons. I've been tracking the OTP of California Zephyr on amtrakdelays.com for a couple of months, and before this week, its performance has been pretty exemplary:
2009-12-05: Scheduled: 4:10 pm Actual: 3:06 pm Delay: -64 minutes
2009-12-04: Scheduled: 4:10 pm Actual: 2:57 pm Delay: -73 minutes
2009-12-03: Scheduled: 4:10 pm Actual: 3:48 pm Delay: -22 minutes
2009-12-02: Scheduled: 4:10 pm Actual: 3:34 pm Delay: -36 minutes
2009-12-01: Scheduled: 4:10 pm Actual: 4:01 pm Delay: -9 minutes
2009-11-30: Scheduled: 4:10 pm Actual: 4:10 pm Delay: 0 minutes
2009-11-29: Scheduled: 4:10 pm Actual: 4:03 pm Delay: -7 minutes
2009-11-28: Scheduled: 4:10 pm Actual: 4:03 pm Delay: -7 minutes
2009-11-27: Scheduled: 4:10 pm Actual: 3:09 pm Delay: -61 minutes
2009-11-26: Scheduled: 4:10 pm Actual: 3:30 pm Delay: -40 minutes
2009-11-25: Scheduled: 4:10 pm Actual: 4:20 pm Delay: 10 minutes
2009-11-24: Scheduled: 4:10 pm Actual: 4:15 pm Delay: 5 minutes
Based on this, I told the group that we will almost certainly be in San Francisco close to on time. Several of us are only going to be in San Francisco for one night, and everyone made plans for the evening. One of us was going to get together with her sister, whom she hasn't seen in a year, another needs to be in SF to upload her conference talk for Monday morning, another had a romantic date planned, etc.
Of course, this week, all hell broke loose. California Zephyrs have been consistently running 6-12 hours late. Our tomorrow's train is already 3 hours late, and a major snowstorm is being forecast for the Sierras this weekend. I just went out with some of the people who will be taking the train with me tomorrow, made them aware of these facts, and already there was a lot of grumbling along the lines of "Amtrak sucks," "we should have flown", and "whose stupid idea was it to take the train anyway?"
My question is, is there anything I can do to make the best of this situation? I envision a lot of pissed off people getting on the train tomorrow, getting more pissed off each time we get delayed. and, if we don't get to SF by Sunday evening, starting to "party" on the train. Given that we're a bunch of guys and gals in our 20s, and some of us are pretty boisterous, it can potentially turn ugly. What to do?
