Using up AGR coupons

I haven't been able to use most of the special coupons I get for being Select plus. Specifically, I still have 2 companion coupons and 4 or 5 of the one-class upgrades. I'm thinking of doing a quick day trip up to DC before the year is out, and I want to know if I can combine my coupons to minimize the cash I have to pay.

Specifically, going up in the morning on a regional with a 4,000 point redemption, and coming home in the evening on an acela Express, either paying fare or redeeming points and using the upgrade to go first class.

Can I combine a point redemption with the companion coupon? And can I combine one or both with the 1-class upgrade for the acela?

If I can do this, do I need 2 upgrade coupons for me and my companion?

You can't redeem BC and upgrade to FC with a coupon. As far as the companion coupon and point redemption I don't think that would be allowed as well.

Bottom line is, if you want to use a upgrade coupon you have to pay for the Coach or BC. If you use companion coupons you must pay to upgrade both yourself and your companion.

But what city pairs would your trip be? That's another factor.

You'd think they would include them for Select Plus members anyways, as they could be given away as gifts or even used by a spouse. Sort of an added bonus for being loyal, and perhaps to encourage others to get their friends to ride Amtrak.

I think of it like some of my other memberships or annual passes, where a higher level may come with benefits that include unaccompanied guest passes. Sure I can go myself, but it would be nice to have an extra that I can use to get a friend in even if I can't be there.
