I think it's what used to be called "being drowsy." It's part of the reason why I like to stop every hour when I'm taking a long drive.

There was another Washington State Ferry incident in April, when a vessel lost power and ran aground. It has been attributed to an engineer who primed a fuel pump with water, allowing water into the fuel tanks and permitting microbial growth causing sludge. It should be noted that the crew responded appropriately, calling to brace for impact, but the slow grounding on sand was "imperceptible."

More and more automobiles are equipped with sleep sensors that require response from the driver to a warning, or they will stop the car. Not sure if they pull off the road to a safe spot…

Ever been driving somewhere while tired, and you suddenly realized you can't remember how you got where you are? That's microsleep.

The loss of power causing the earlier grounding was explainable. This latest accident / wreck, ploughing the pilings while falling asleep at the wheel sounds like the craft was on auto pilot and it wasn’t an instantaneous lack of attention. The Capt. Was taking a full on snooze.
