There were a couple of errors I saw in the article.

One was the times mentioned above. But the biggest was "... the CZ ... which runs between Chicago and Oakland ..." It's been MANY, MANY years since the CZ ran to OKJ instead of just to EMY!
I don't think the CZ ever ran to OKJ. I did ride it a few times from the Oakland 16th Street Station. But when that station closed after the Loma Prieta Earthquake of 1989, the CZ terminated instead at Emeryville, CA.

#6 would arrive around midnight, #5 would arrive around 1 AM. West Wendover, Nevada observes Mountain Time instead of the Pacific Time like most of the rest of the state. I assume that the only reason to get a stop there would be to entice more gamblers to come to this very remote location (although it is the closest gambling location to Salt Lake City).
Actually, both #5 and #6 are scheduled to pass through Wendover between 1 and 2 AM, local time, depending upon on-time status at SLC and ELK, respectively, with arrival in their next destinations about 2-2.5 hours later, depending on opposing freight traffic.

It's all about capturing the automobile travelers from SLC to the W. Wendover casinos. I wish them well.
Given how isolated West Wendover and Wendover are, I expect that many of the passengers using that stop would be locals. That is a remote part of Nevada, a long way from even modest sized cities or airports. It is a straight shot to Salt Lake City on I-80, but that is still a 120+ mile drive. I would expect that people living there make trips to SLC for some of their major shopping.

The CZ provides a travel option for trips to SLC, Denver, Chicago and in the other direction, Reno. SF Bay area. With a population of 4,400 in West Wendover and 1,400 in Wendover, it is not going to a major CZ stop. But it could get 4 or 5K passengers a year for the CZ.. If the town and state pay for all the cost of the station and stopping there can be done by taking a little padding from the CZ schedule, then it will be a net plus for the CZ.

Actually OAK continued to be used through sometime between April and October 1995. Then it started terminating at OKJ. See the October 1995 timetable:

Also incidentally notice, that by October 1995 the CZ was already down to four times a week in order to have enough equipment to run the CZ, Pioneer and Desert Wind.

Eh, I'm inclined to forgive that one. Not counting railfans, most people outside of the Bay Area wouldn't have a clue where Emeryville, CA is. Saying the CZ runs to Oakland is good enough for a general circulation publication, IYAM. The bigger error, IMO, was saying that the eastbound CZ passes through Wendover around 7:30 p.m. I think it's more like midnight. IOW, this station is going to be a quickie middle-of-the-night stop in both directions.
Emeryville? It's the HQ for several companies like LeapFrog. Of course the most prominent employer in Emeryville is Pixar. I think many have heard of Emeryville and have a vague idea where it is.
Yeah, but it might still help if they called it something like "San Francisco Bay - Emeryville". There are tons of places I've heard of at some point because they were mentioned in the news or some coroprate HQ is there. So I'd recognize them but I'd be hard pressed to find them on the map or even put them in the right state.
