I've been watching the status of the Texas Eagle #22 over the past couple of days, and have noticed that it has been running extremely late from Texas up to Chicago. Today, it arrived in Chicago 4 1/2 hours late, and today, it's running over 3 hours late so far. Does anybody know what the issue is? I have tickets to take it this coming Friday, and I'm not liking what I'm seeing.

I'm on 22 right now, at Mineola. The initial delay was due to a UP crew timing out while parked on the single track. (Can't they pull into a siding first?)

Then at Fort Worth we picked up the 40th anniversary train which added another hour. And the police took a passenger of at Dallas which added some delay too. (I didn't see what the issue was.)

I'll be taking this train from Austin on Thursday, so I've been watching it anxiously today too. 22 was also severely delayed into St. Louis today, which set it back several hours. 21 out of Chicago is delayed a few hours today too.

The last update this morning shows they are almost 3-1/2 hours late leaving Little Rock. That, plus the re-route, means the train will most definitely be late getting into Chicago today. I just don't understand how Amtrak even stays in business with this kind of service. Don't get me wrong, I love trains, and I wish the USA had a rail system like other countries do (it's embarrassing that we don't!!). But, given this type of service, I can see why more people don't want to take the train. I have to catch the Hiawatha in Chicago to get to Milwaukee, and then drive another 3 hours past that to my destination. What happens if I get into Chicago so late that I can't make any of the Hiawathas that day? I mean, yesterday, it was over 4 hours late getting in, leaving one train left to catch that day to get to Chicago, and that would have made me get to my destination at midnight! That is insane!! Sorry, just venting.........

Sorry....meant to say <<leaving on etrian left to catch that day to Milwaukee>>

4 hours late is not the norm. Sometimes things happen.

Yep, I know it's not the norm, but it definitely happens a lot more by train than by air. It's very disheartening that the rail system nationwide just sucks. I live in the DFW area of Texas, and it frustrates me that we do not have any type of rail service for the metroplex, say, like Chicago or New York has. We are in such dire need of that here, yet no one wants to pay for it (but they sure do like to complain about the traffic!!).

Amstatus lists trackwork CHI/STL which maybe cascades on #21 as the trains lose their slots south of STL. But that in no way explains all of it. AlanH gave us one good sample of what's been going wrong. Is the rest of it just endless coincidence? I don't see anything on TO either.

I'm not sure what you expected. Did you think there would be some kind of business class bus? Call Amtrak and get a refund.

no i did not expect that ,

i did expect amtrak to treat us with respect and not lie to us

telling us the train was at union station waiting on us,

if the wolverine left tell us that and offer us something for our inconvineous

after all we paid good money for our travel

That's why you call customer service. You'll be taken care of.

How did Amtrak lie to you?
not me ryan

everyone on the train

they told us as we were aproching union station that

the wolverine was waiting for us and the shuttle would take us to our train

if that aint lieing i dont know what is lieing

it was chaos in chicago a total cluster

Did you fail to consider the fact that Amtrak changed their mind after you were told that and didn't hold the train?

Or that the person that made that announcement was using outdated information?

Lying involves an intent to deceive. Amtrak didn't lie to you.

i just talked to amtrak they are cominsateing me with a volcher fpr free travel for haveing to wait 7 hours for the engine being fixed and refunding my money for the business class ticket i bought and for the attitude of the rude amtrak employee in chicago for makeing us take the bus last night

Dear Wabbit, and to whoever else it applies:

This is not whatever format it is where it is considered the norm to write near indecipherable misspelled non capitalized punctuation free English. While a certain amount of misspelling can be expected, after all, this is not an English classroom, a reasonable attempt at correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc, to achieve at least about an eighth grade level of writing coherence is expected.

Wabbit, what you ran into was the right hand not knowing what the left hand was doing and vise versa.

Which is exactly what I would told you would happen way back at the beginning.

Amen.

I live in the DFW area too, and guess what, we DO have rail service for the metroplex- there is DART Light Rail system, the Trinity Railway Express between Dallas and Fort Worth, and the newly introduced A-Train to Denton. Its just that the metroplex is way too huge and the areas served by the rail system is limited in comparison. If you happen to live and work close to rail stations, then the service is pretty frequent, convenient and safe. Currently I do not use public transit because my apartment is 6 miles away from nearest rail station, but I am seriously considering moving to an apartment near a DART station and travel to work by train instead of driving.

Now if you are talking about rail service from Dallas to other cities in the country, then well, I agree with you it is dismal. Just one rarely-on-time train taking an eternity to reach San Antonio and Chicago is just not good.
