The run from SAB to Essex Jct itself is pretty boring. You do get up to a decent clip for a large part of the segment, but scenery wise there isn't much. Although IIRC one of the best sunsets I've ever seen was just north of Essex. It's been over four years ago though so I don't exactly remember.
Just north of Essex? I think it's only possible to see the sun at that time for a few weeks a year...so you must have been up there sometime in the June/July timeframe. There was a time I was making a trip a week out to the train station to pick up a friend who was regularly commuting by rail, and I can only recall a handful of times that it wasn't pitch black when the train pulled into Essex. Most of the sunsets I see now are just south of Brattleboro!

For a great sunset, get off in Essex, and watch the sun set over the lake and the Adirondacks in Burlington the next evening...
 
Interesting that Google Map shows Amtrak Port Kent station 4 miles north from the ferry, somewhere in woods... :blink:
