Maybe it is a horn, but those railroads that still use them, the lineside sign that tells them to blow it still has a "W" on it to tell them where to start blowing it.
Good point....

...protocol delibrately, and for good reason, dies hard on a railroad when it comes to things like this. For another example, 'daylight' a tunnel and see if tunnel numbers change to reflect the new reality.

Or milepost's, when a segment of a route is replaced by a shorter or longer one....
