There are HEP cables in that picture, but there's also something that looks like a red hose. What's that for?
Can't speak to the other stuff, II, but the red hose seen in pic 3 (bad focus) and pic 4 (Boardman) is a propane line running from the two cannisters that can be seen rigged and chained to the rail under the end of the car; for cooking, no doubt.
Aloha

That canister looks more like a small construction Air compressor to me. Also if am not mistaken Propane is stored in white tanks that are a little larger. And I bet LA fire regs. would not permit Propane tanks that close to the HEP connection or not have a big "No Smoking" sign. Lastly it probably providing air pressure for the toilet flushing since the car is not connected to an engine air line.

Went back to the picture and took advantage of the magnify tool and the hose is connected to the train "Air" hose.

Just my 2 cents, and we know how much that's worth

I've never heard of a rule that says PV's need an extra conductor. Where did you hear that?
Here's the rule from Amtrak

5. When occupied private cars are traveling on Amtrak, the following criterion applies:

a) A person-in-charge will be identified for all private car moves. The person-in-charge of the private car

must be identified on the private car movement request form when it is submitted to Amtrak s System

Operations Department and their name indicated on the Passenger Name Record (PNR).

b) The person-in-charge of the private car must meet with the Conductor at the originating point of their trip

and they must discuss the emergency plan for the private car. In addition, they must discuss the

evacuation plan along with a method of communication in the event of an emergency.

c) The person-in-charge of the private car must also complete a new Form NRPC 3160 Private Car

Passenger Record (see attachment 2) that identifies all passengers that will be on-board the private car.

The person-in-charge will give the completed form(s) to the Conductor, who will place these

document(s) in the Train Collections Pouch. If the NRPC 3160 form is unavailable, form NRPC 3085

On-Board Passenger Record may be substituted.

d) The person-in-charge of the private car must not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs throughout

the trip.

e) In the event that a Private Car Owner cannot meet these requirements, Amtrak will provide an additional

crew member to accompany the car at the Owners expense.
Yeah the rules indicated you don't need one, unless you don't have someone in your party willing to be responsible and not drink.

Of course if you are traveling alone in your own private Budd dome where the dome has been turned into a master bedroom you'll want to indulge in a tipple to enjoy yourself. So perhaps when I win the MegaMillions jackpot, I'll bring along a companion-- a butler or something.

Doesn't the average lottery player lose money to the lottery, and aren't there far better ways to acquire millions of dollars?
Who said anything about me being average? Hah.

I don't play anyway-- but a guy can dream...
As the NYS Lottery said/says: "All it takes is a dollar and a dream!"

After all, we all still dream that Amtrak will run on a dollar (or two)!

Okay, boyz & girlz, here's the deal; The Beech Grove Affair:

Exchanged waves and shouts with Big Joe as Beech Grove passed Van Nuys on Thursday evening. Yapped about it on another thread, including the possibility of meeting the guy again. Didn't think it would happen, but fun to talk about.

Friday, upon arriving at LAUS aboard Surfliner 784, me and Alice, of the Patrick & Alice RailRiot 2009, found Beech Grove parked pretty much where I had thought it would be. I'd hardly begun getting shots when Big Joe appeared on Beech Grove's rear platform. He'd recognized us from the night before at Van Nuys, and had come out to say hello.

I walked up, Big Joe came down from the deck, and we shook hands as we did the introduction thing. He walked over to greet Alice, and we all started talking this and that about Amtrak.

Now I know most everybody here has serious questions about all things Amtrak, and I'm no different. However, it seemed to me to be neither the time nor the place for hardcore issues to be raised. More of a social occasion; a meet & greet. I mean, what would YOU do? Start grilling the guy?? I don't think so.

Told him we were looking forward to hearing him speak at the NARP meeting the next day, we talked a little about his SoCal itinerary, and yapped a bit about high speed rail.

Then I screwed up what little is left of my courage and asked Big Joe if he wouldn't mind posing for some pictures. Told him up front about AU, that the pics would be posted online, and that I thought our viewers would like to see such pics. A very nice man, he readily agreed. After getting the pic of him waving from the platform I pushed it a bit and asked for a pic of him and me together, taken by Alice.

Big Joe one-upped me by saying he'd get somebody to take a pic of all of us. He went into Beech Grove for a few moments, then came back with Pat Shaw, his lovely Executive Assistant. She would take pics. Spent a bit of time palavering with Ms. Shaw about how my camera works, then she got the shots.

Not wishing to intrude any longer, and with checked baggage to collect and a Metro Plaza Hotel reservation, so longs were exchanged all around as we parted ways for the time being.

EPILOGUE: Sunday I was hustling to board Surfliner 769. Joe Boardman happened to be strolling the platform back toward Beech Grove at the same time, and we exchanged greetings again.

Patrick - does he/did he seem to know what AU is?

I have met Boardman twice in the past. The longer meeting was during an ESPA meeting when he was the NY State Commissioner of Transportation and was during the days of the Turbotrain and Supersteel affair. Naturaly you can imagine what the big subject of discussion was.

He is indeed a very pleasant person and I found him easy to talk to and quite reachable

Yes, absolutely. He remembers names even. He also said there was a transdorm between Beech Grove and the rest of the cars so he could interact with others, that he did so, but after 9pm or so he needed to stop.

Actually, I think you mean Turboliner. The UA Turbotrains were all scrapped years ago.

Al Papp told me that one of Boardman's priorities is to reverse the decision on the Turboliners and put them back into Empire Corridor service. Does anyone know if he knows what he's talking about on this one? I hope not. Those things belong in the big yard in the sky.

Anyone know what day the Beechgrove leave L.A?
Snuffy
I saw it still there this morning. I can't find the post now, of course, but I thought I remember reading somewhere here on AU that it would be there until at least tomorrow night (Tuesday 5/5), but I could be mistaken.

PS: singwith, I think I may have encountered you many times in person. Do you have long hair, and often appear at the Glendale station with a nice camera? :)

I'm trying to capture it on film but not sure what day or what train. Hoping it go with #2 on WED but I don't think that happen.

Singwith, are you also the Snuffy from West Coast Rail Forums? BTW, I recall Boardman saying he's going elsewhere on Wednesday, but don't remember where, and sure don't know his departure plans.

And I saw you again last night, while hurrying (unnecessarily...I was early) from the Red Line to the Amtrak platforms at the east end of the tunnel, while you were hurrying in the opposite direction. I would have said 'hi', but you seemed rushed (and angry :p ), and I could also remember neither the word 'singwith' nor the word 'Snuffy'.
Did you get your picture?

Thanks for the tip. I was able to see it last night. Beech Grove left L.A with #4.

I did see you. If you don't believe me, here's a hint: that lipstick was really loud. :p There was nothing to pay attention to, you don't even know what I look like. :p We haven't spoken at GDL, except (IIRC) a token nod and 'hello'. But now that we've broken the ice here, I may just pursue a slightly longer conversation next time. :p
