If I can remember correctly, I think the Empire Builder only has a wine tasting one day. Last summer I traveled from SEA to West Glacier and the next day I traveled from WGL to CHI. I only had one wine tasting and I believe it was sometime after WGL but before MSP.

The amtrak facebook page just had a post about this yesterday.

I really enjoyed the wine and cheese tasting on the CS! Both days were super fun. We got pretty full pours of all of the wines.

Lucky you. We had Michelle working the PPC on the 11 last Saturday and she said that she was supposed to be able to get 16 pours per bottle (1.5 oz ea) so she was being pretty stingy with it. However, since there weren't 16 people participating that did leave some in each bottle which she said would become a free pour at dinner in the PPC for those same people. I had 2 comp'ed beers instead (the first because she had run out of the flat steak and the second because she tossed away a 1/2 finished beer before I could speak up  ).

I'll be on the EB next week. Do they do the wine tasting in the dining car or do they boot people out of the lounge car for this?

Does the EB and CS offer wine/cheese tasting each day for sleeper patrons?

Yes - assuming the train is running and hasn't been canceled.
Here is a plan. On the westbound EB, extend the wine and cheese event by an hour each time this spring's train is 2 hours or more late out of Devil's Lake. Dinner patrons would be smiling and much happier.

I'll vote for that...... :giggle:

I admit that I was pretty lucky on that train. It was the first week of free wine tastings - previously it had been a charge for sleeper pax - and the PPC attendant was not only giving heavy pours in the wine tasting, he wasn't charging for any glasses of wine if you bought a CS souvenir glass. He said he wasn't sure of the procedure for the wine since this was his first route with the tasting not having a charge.

I don't drink, but love cheese. Anyone ever go to these just for the cheese?
During the Lake Shore Limited Wine and Cheese on a trip last JAN, not only did we get unlimited pours and plenty of Cheese and Crackers, there were big clusters of good Grapes as well. When I commented how good the Blue Cheese was, the LSA quickly returned with a whole 8 ounce package for me, saying if it didn't get served, it would be thrown away. I ate my fill then stashed the rest in the 'fridge on the deadhead Lounge for later :)

They were serving plates of cheese to the children in the car during the wine tasting when I was on the EB. I don't see why you couldn't go just for the cheese.

I have been to the LSL reception. It is (was?) less of a tasting and more of a welcome reception. They even had sparking cider for us and the kids.

So it is more of a wine tasting with cheese around than a wine & cheese tasting?

Will be in the Coast Starlight end of June beginning of July for the first time.

No, I didn't say that.

On my trip, they had four types of wine and four types of cheese. The cheese was supposedly picked to go with the wine. The cheese was just already all cut into cubes and plated onto individual plates and wrapped in plastic. When we arrived, the PPC attendant gave each participant a plate of cheese and crackers to go with the wine. The accompanying written materials for the tasting had tasting notes for both the cheese and wine. When there were extra plates of cheese available, the PPC attendant distributed them as well because he said they would be tossed if they weren't eaten.

I would definitely say it was a wine & cheese tasting, where both the wine and the cheese were featured.

When I rode the EB last year the tasting definitely included the cheeses as compliments to each wine, the server suggested which cheese to eat with each wine, and there were as many comments on the cheese as on the wine. I enjoyed it thoroughly, and even got one of the trivia answers correct!

So - it is news to me there is a tasting on the CS - when and where does it take place on the Northbound CS? And does it remain free?

The tasting in the CS had recently became free as well. I am not sure exactly where the n/b CS is when the tasting is done, however, it is usually done both days after lunch in the PPC.

It was around 3 pm on BOTH days heading north from LAX to SEA. It was in the PPC.

Does the Capitol Limited have a Wine and Cheese tasting? If so, any idea what time? We are traveling on it in July.

Best I can recall, we had the tasting on the N/B CS after we left San Luis Obispo.

A couple weeks ago on the northbound CS, the wine tasting began at precisely 3:00, and wrapped up just before the stop at SLO (about 3:45).
