I will be visiting Miami via the Silver Service trains in October and have a couple of questions. 1. Are there any hotels near the Miami Amtrak Station? 2. Is the area around the station safe and is it safe to walk from the Amtrak Station to the nearby light rail station?

    Rail Pass

I did just that a couple of years ago with the 15-day rail pass. One of the routings that I recommend is to take the Adirondack up the Hudson Valley and along Lake Champlain from New York City to Port Kent, NY, then take the ferry across to Burlington, VT, and back to New York City on the...

Although not an Amtrak signal, the station in Hammond, LA (HMD) has wifi. It is called "Hammond Free Wireless" and comes from the Hammond Chamber of Commerce, also located in the station building.

Another dope smuggler on the Empire Builder

I'm on the eastbound Sunset Limited #2 right now. Yesterday afternoon at El Paso, a guy was taken off the train and arrested by undercover cops with a drug-sniffing dog. The guy had two suitcases of cocaine with him.

    Diamond Crossings

A prime example of a very busy diamond crossing is the Colton Diamond in Colton, CA. It is where the BNSF double-track transcon line crosses the UP Sunset Route, also double track, on their way into the Los Angeles metro area. I have passed through the diamond multiple times on Amtrak. Two...
