    last week there was a half-page amtrak ad in the local alternative weekly, The Pitch. it mentioned service from kansas city to all of the towns on the missouri route, as well as the major cities served by the chief. first time i have ever seen advertising for amtrak locally!

    i'm planning a trip in january that has me arriving at penn station on the adirondack around 8 PM and leaving at 11 AM the next day for connecticut. is there a hostel or cheap place to stay near penn station? i don't mind sharing a bath.

    someone should set up a website where riders can rank each menu item (or at least the most common ones). that way, if an item improves (like the fruit), we can see the ranking increase in aggregate.

    it also appears that the recent UP track work between jeff city and st. louis in missouri has resulted in a 1-hour reduction in travel time between kansas city and st. louis.

    we experienced SDS on the SWC from KC to chicago this weekend. our one meal was fine (the burger), and i don't see any problem with the changes. as long as they still offer a place to sit and eat and the food is better than mcdonald's, i'm fine.
