St. Louis Gateway Transportation Center Question

i have made this connection and you will be fine. it's a brand new facility and totally ADA compliant. you exit the metrolink train, walk up a ramp to the multimodal station building, then there are escalators/elevators to take you to the amtrak platforms. it's no more walking than you'll do...

bicycle as baggage at unstaffed station

pretty sure all bikes must be *boxed* first, then checked, on all LD trains. some corridor trains allow bikes to be rolled on board (the missouri trains are one example). honestly, i would check to see if bike rentals are available at your destination.

    QuikTrak Problems?

having a live agent rarely provides added value for the average ticket buyer (same for airlines). i always choose the *consistent experience* of the quiktrak machine. for cancellations, i prefer amtrak.com. i've never had a situation that one of those two methods couldn't handle.

    Missouri River Runner to Omaha

amtrak has a new restriction: it cannot run operate any route less than 750 miles after 2013 (?) without a state subsidy. 750+ miles would equal long distance, regardless of the states served. service between KC and omaha would require operational funding from at least missouri, and probably...

    Changes to the Cardinal

so with the mandate for amtrak to give up all routes to states that are less than 750 miles in length by 2013, what would this mean for the hoosier state? would indiana have to pay for it regardless of this change? i know that mandate will also affect the empire service.

    Changes to the Cardinal

23 hours to DC though amazing scenery sounds great! i would probably use this often to get to indy and cincy, too. would this make a connection with CONO possible? if so, i would also use this for a trip to memphis and NOLA.

    Need advice planning long trip

i did a very long trip (26 days) a few years ago. i based my trip plan primarily on the places i wanted to go, then found the best routes to fit that plan... i had friends in some cities (LA, portland, hartford, boston) and had not been to others (albuquerque, ann arbor, montreal, toronto)...

NEW KANSAS SERVICE REPORT - QUESTION

the largest capital expense in alternative 3 is double-tracking. amtrak insisted they were seeking 100% on-time performance and 79 mph speeds along the entire route. it *could* be done during the daytime for less, but you would presumably sacrifice travel time.

Any other ideas for transportation from Santa Monica, CA to Union Stat

pack light and take the bus, otherwise i wouldn't complain about cost. packing light will also serve you well once you arrive at your destination.

    Mobile phone app?

the mobile web version of amtrak.com is easy-to-use and looks wonderful on every mobile device... even the lowest grade flip phones. iphone development costs money. i'd rather amtrak stay focused on implementation of e-ticketing to get them out of the dark ages.

Kansas DOT to release route study Thursday

3-5 years is the unofficial expectation. all states are broke right now. amtrak was quick to point out that they haven't lost a state-sponsored train (yet). the operating expenses will be the big question here (capital will have a federal match and be split between three states), and that money...

Kansas DOT to release route study Thursday

i was at the press conference today and in a meeting later with amtrak and KDOT. there is a lot of momentum behind alternative 3 due to the unexpectedly high ridership. the high capital cost ($479m) is due to a lot of double-tracking to obtain "100% OTP" and full 79 mph service. amtrak doesn't...

Talgo selects site in Milwaukee to build trains!

all hiawathas are six cars? doesn't the addition of two entirely new trainsets allow more trips, possibly allowing the non-talgo trainsets to become even longer? while i agree that the talgo may not in and of itself have more capacity, two new trainsets equals more overall capacity for amtrak...

Talgo selects site in Milwaukee to build trains!

just read that capacity will go from 350 to 420. excellent news!

Talgo selects site in Milwaukee to build trains!

i've read the new talgos will have 13 cars, which i assume will be a big capacity boost. how many cars do the current hiawathas or cascades have? when i rode both i don't remember them having quite that many.

"Flyaway Bus" Service from LAX to Union Station-Anyone Used

flyaway is a great service. i used it last spring. it's a bit confusing the first time because it's not run by the local transit agency, but by the airport... so ticketing and boarding areas weren't shared. regardless, downtown LA gets a bad rap... just stay away from skid row (google it) and...
