One follow up trip note, especially for early train risers: Coffee was available both in the sleeper and in the diner. The diner opened at 630. But for those up earlier than that, the SCA had the coffeepot brewing before 5 am - smelled great, still wasn't going to get me up at that hour.

I've gotten roasted for this in the past, but still believe that only service animals belong on trains and planes. Please spare me any attacks, as it does not matter one bit what my opinion happens to be. Also, OP, sorry you had a negative experience. Hoping for better future travels!

I've been reading about safety concerns I didn't know existed, apart from the scheduling policies - length of freights being among them. And the host of potential safety concerns that go along with it. Nationalizing the railroads is a great discussion to have!

Well, after time (and some extra expense) rebooking train, hotel and a one way plane ticket, looks like it was for nothing. Could have kept my original booking on the 17th. Kind of irritating but not important in the scheme of things.

This staffing model has been in place for a while, for transportation companies, and it's a wonder it's lasted as long as it has. Then again greed will always strangle the goose that laid the golden egg in the end.
