which direction of travel on the chief

Westbound you have roughly Flagstaff to Raton in daylight. You can have breakfast in the Painted Desert, lunch in Albuquerque, and dinner in Raton pass.

(The first link is missing the colon between http and // which is why there's an issue with it.)

    Dining Service without a Diner

The issue with the Viewliners is there was supposed to be a second Viewliner sleeper/diner/coach order, but it never happened, leaving them short all these years. The old diners (and baggage cars) have simply have too many miles on them, which makes replacement urgent. If kept as spares, I...

    Microwave and hot water

I haven't actually seen hot water in the Superliner sleepers -- in my experience, they've got the old coffee urns that make coffee from ground coffee. The Douwe Egberts coffee dispensers (that mix a coffee syrup with hot water) are the ones with the hot water spigots.

Update on Seattle King Street Station Restoration

You won't be able to see much right now, other than the temporary waiting area. I see the "Electric Stairs to Jackson St" are gone. Just as well, since they haven't worked in years. I did like the neon sign (plus the odd "electric stairs" name), though. From what I read, the access will be by...

What's Up With Texas Eagle #22?

I'm on 22 right now, at Mineola. The initial delay was due to a UP crew timing out while parked on the single track. (Can't they pull into a siding first?) Then at Fort Worth we picked up the 40th anniversary train which added another hour. And the police took a passenger of at Dallas which...

    40th Anniversary Train

I know exactly where it is - about three cars in front of me. It was hooked up to the front of the Texas Eagle 22 today which I'm on. Unfortunately, we were already 2.5 hours late (thanks, UP), and after the switching we're about 3.5 hours late.

Weight limits on upper berths in Superliner Sleepers

Fortunately I'm not claustrophobic. I'm going to be in an upper Superliner roomette bunk for the next three nights -- I'm taking the TE from Maricopa to Chicago (and the LSL to Boston).

    Route change for SWC?

Unfortunately, I think a reroute is inevitable. Amtrak can't afford to maintain the track from Lamy-Tridad by itself, and BNSF doesn't want to do it. The deal for NM buying the track seems to be dead. It's the same issue with Phoenix and SP/UP all over again. Now that Abo Canyon east of Belen...

    Maricopa to Phoenix

As mentioned above, the Maricopa Express commuter bus no longer runs. A pity, because it might have worked for arriving passengers on weekdays with the new schedule. Of course, the real solution is to get Amtrak back to Phoenix. Today's Arizona Republic has an article on Phoenix Union Station...

    Texas Eagle/Sunset Limited schedule change

Yep, particularly the 5:40am one. A lot of people commute to Phoenix and get an early start. Although the stop is scheduled for 10 minutes, it's usually much longer due to the number of passengers and luggage. So we're looking at the crossing being closed from 5:40-6:10. It's even worse if...

    Texas Eagle/Sunset Limited schedule change

I see that the city of Maricopa has put up signs warning of the schedule change, and had a meeting about it. Unfortunately, the station location next to the main highway (AZ 347) and the very short platform means the train blocks the highway for up to half an hour (multiple spotting). The...

    New uses for old stations

The old ticket lobby at LAUS shows up all the time -- just saw it a few days ago in a commercial. As for using a real location, the problem is how much the normal operation of the site will interfere with filming, and vice versa. A busy hotel may not want their entrance blocked off by a tank.

    alcohol in coach

Re: the TSA, it's not illegal to bring booze aboard, otherwise duty free would really be hurting. You bring whatever in your baggie through screening, and any amount you purchase after security. It's just illegal to consume it unless it's served by the flight attendant. (And yes, this is a...

    Metroliner Resurrection?

Heh. Granted in 2003. As noted above, there aren't trademark police cruising around looking for trademarks; enforcement is mainly up to the trademark owners. As long as they can demonstrate they're using the trademark in the field for which it was granted, they can prevent anyone else from...

    Freight Traffic on Holidays

My parents' house is near the BNSF line into Phoenix, and there were a couple of trains this afternoon.

    Check in for CA Surfliner

To be specific, in LAUS there's an arch with gates C and D marked that's near the tunnel to the tracks. The departure board only gives C or D as the departure track. At boarding time, an attendant opens the rope at the gate and announces which track the train will be leaving from. Everyone lined...

Downeaster should be extended to South Station

True, there's not really any new capacity, though the better ramp designs makes it flow a little bit smoother. The existing elevated freeway was falling apart (there were several emergency repairs required before it was finally retired). The issue was either rebuilding it in some fashion, or...
