Looks like Acela weekday service is going to what looks like a modification of the regular weekend schedule, including carrying the 22XX numbers for most of the trains. That is a substantial seat reduction. 16 round trips to 5 for New York - Washington.

You seem to be assuming that everyone wants to talk to strangers at dinner. That is not the case. If you are not into small talk at dinner, having strangers sitting facing you at a booth makes that situation much more awkward particularly if they are talkative. At least with the new system...

Lake Shore Limited direct service to New York was suspended for three months in the summer of 2018 due to construction. That could explain some of the ridership drop from FY2017 to 18.

I would recommend getting a roomette for the Chicago to Fargo leg over a coach seat. It will get you dinner that evening and provides a private place to sit with an assured window. Solo in coach may or may not get a window seat. I will also make a pitch for you to stay on the Builder overnight...

The flex meals are not microwaved. They are warmed in convection ovens - same as Acela First Class and aircraft galleys.

While the Auto Train has some sleepers with all bedrooms on the upper level it also has regular sleepers with upper level roomettes. It is possible to have an upper level roomette on the Auto Train.
