Southwest Chief News & Future Operations

I have to agree with you, the default Amtrak position is clearly "no can do" rather than "this is what we need" in order to save this route. Amtrak is in the business of running trains, right? Or only the trains they want? I booked a trip in July to ride #4 LAX > CHI before it and/or the...

Elimination of diners on western Amtrak long distance trains?

I hate to panic over rumors, but that would really stink. Me and hubby are supposed to take the SW Chief in February CHI>LAX. A bus bridge and elimination of traditional dining service really makes the cost of the tickets we bought much less desirable. RPA/NARP, I hope you can rescue us!

    asm.transitdocs.com down?

The data feed from Amtrak was not updating from Monday around 8:30 AM to today around 7:45 AM. It kept providing the same data. I don't know why it didn't update and why it took Amtrak so long to fix it. It may not be monitored robustly on their side. Or, maybe it was a severe problem. Who...

    Transitdocs map frozen

The Amtrak Status Maps site is updating since it uses different source data.

    Transitdocs map frozen

I watch this data, too, and it's an Amtrak problem (their own Track-a-Train map is also not updating). But I don't have a good way to contact someone responsible for the source data. When you use their "Contact Us" webpage to report a problem, they reply with something like "The map shows the...

    Transitdocs map frozen

The data has started to update once again.

    Transitdocs map frozen

Amtrak's data feed stopped updating but they are aware of the problem. I don't have any info of when it might be fixed. Don't forget that Amtrak Status Maps also has live data for the trains.

    amtrak crescent delays

The incredible delays and unreliable service is unfortunate. My in-laws wanted to travel Atlanta to Tocoaa and back to visit friends, but an early evening train ride turning into a wee-hours-of-the-morning ride isn't going to happen. Not to mention waiting at the cramped ATL station. I'm sure Mr...

State Funded trains are on time more?

You can play around with some links on "ASMAD" - an archive of Amtrak Status Maps on-time performance. Average OTP by train number, entire route, service disruptions, etc. https://juckins.net/amtrak_status/archive/html/home.php

Amtrak's New "Fresh Choices" Dining on CL & LSL

I'm really disappointed with this change. I liked the watching the countryside pass while enjoying a hot meal and meeting new people (but then escaping back to my room at times). Question - I live in a state whose senators despise Amtrak and its horrid 'waste'. What's the best action for me to...

Amtrak ending BC on AT and Crescent May 1st

I like Devil's suggestion. I would *gladly* pay extra on an overnight route where I could be guaranteed to have an empty seat next to me. Amtrak should really consider that.

    amtrak crescent delays

Norfolk Southern supposedly started moving freight traffic across the Central of Georgia district again, which is Birmingham-Columbus-Macon. But it doesn't seem to be helping the congestion. 19 and 20 have terrible timekeeping and I stopped taking the train ATL-WAS for work because it's too...

    Brattleboro, VT Train Station parking?

Dad and I rode from Brattleboro in Dec 2014. There was limited parking at the station and I'm not sure if overnight was allowed. In addition to calling the police which is an excellent idea, you might try the local chamber of commerce or town hall. I seem to remember a lot of side streets nearby...

    NEC catenary question

The situation is indeed unfortunate, as I assume the variable tension catenary would eventually have to be replaced with constant tension at some future date. Of course, I may not be around to see that date or fast trains requiring the constant tension may not run on that alignment in my lifetime.

    NEC catenary question

This is an old thread but I’ll still post my question here. Trains magazine has an article that discusses the on-going catenary upgrades between Trenton and New Brunswick (April 2018 - Wiring New Jersey for speed). What surprises me is that Amtrak is using 2 methods to do these upgrades –...

No more charters & special moves: 3/28/18 Memo fr Anderson

Just add/remove the private cars at the origin or destination stations. No work at intermediate stops. A few years ago I was on the WB Sunset and we were late, yes, probably due to a Class 1 issue, but I do not recall the reason. But I do remember we were making up time and actually got to...

No more charters & special moves: 3/28/18 Memo fr Anderson

I know this is a hot topic, but how much money does Amtrak lose, as well as annoy or alienate customers when a PV move delays the train? Then a late train only gets later and later. I've been on several trips where a private car has cost us only 30-60 minutes but also one where we left 2+...

    Business Class on the Crescent

True! I just wanted to find a quieter place on the train with a half-decent chance of getting some sleep and not paying an arm and a leg. The BC option was much cheaper than a sleeper.

    Business Class on the Crescent

Yep, Amtrak posted the new Crescent schedule online and BC is removed May 1. I used it once and I also liked the quieter atmosphere, especially overnight WAS > ATL.
