    No Checked Bags at Cleveland

I am hoping that is the case and that this is not a permanent policy. I think there are going to be some people boarding in CLE in the morning that will not be happy, especially the many Amish who ride to Chicago and westward. Many people check their bags at CLE for longer distance transfers...

    No Checked Bags at Cleveland

Just received a notice from Amtrak that there will be no checked bags at Cleveland station for my trip which is scheduled for Wed morning at 2:45am. Rather short notice and very surprised that we have now lost this service. Not sure if there was a problem with acquiring a baggage car on 29/29...

    Share a Coke with...Amtrak

I also do not drink soda (or Pop, if you are from Ohio).:) Wish they could have some lemonade or HI C products instead of offering only water as a choice

Why trains instead of planes for long distance?

In many cases of bad weather, the train can make it through while planes will be grounded and nightmare rescheduling...etc. Scenery is fantastic, most people on a train are friendly. Lots of options for routes to go to the West. We use the train to get us to a destination close to National...

Want history on the Penn-Tex and Sunshine Special trains

My mother, grandmother and brother rode this train in 1957 from Newark, Ohio to San Antonio, TX. I was five years old and in school so I had to stay behind. I believe they rode coach the entire distance as we had little money to have a sleeper. I guess my 4 year old brother was inspired by...

Capitol Limited or Lake Shore Limited

Of course you could park in South Bend and take the South Shore line to Chicago. Perhaps more reliable time without the long layover in Chicago.

    Planning Key West Trip

Just as an alternative suggestion: We took the Meteor to Hollywood. Stayed the night at a Hampton Inn that was reasonably priced. Enterprise picked us up the next morning.. headed south to Keys from there. We stayed on Marathon at a nice Holiday Inn Express and drove to Key West and other...

    Hurricane Dorian (2019)

Stay safe Penny, Jis and all Floridians. Have friends and relatives all over the state. I think hurricanes, hot summers, snakes, alligators and traffic are the reasons we live in rural Ohio...many smiles. Wishing you all the best! B&C

    Silver Bridge Collapse

Yes, I remember the event. I was a sophomore in high school and it happened during the Christmas season. Very cold and a great tragedy as many cars went into the river and along the bank. They closed all of the bridges for inspections and eventually tore down a few that had structural flaws...

New Member Info Requested (re Santa Fe, NM)

I agree with Jim that going into ABQ and renting car there is a better bet. There is a Enterprise not far from the station that will pick you up. There is a bit of a problem if 3 is running very late. I was told the airport Enterprise would honor reservations but they do not pickup and you...

    Hotel near St Louis station?

We have stayed at the Drury and it is a very good choice. Nice old building that has been refurbed by Drury. Evening dinner meal as well as breakfast is free. Staff is excellent and just a short walk to the Metro station.

    Help planning a northeast trip

Portland Maine has many opportunities for exploring such as the Mail Boat that travels to different islands delivering goods while you watch and enjoy the scenery. The 2 foot gauge mini railroad is a nice ride. A great art museum and lots of shops, breweries. A ride on the Vermonter is also...

    Auto Train Questions

We take a Dodge Grand Caravan when we take the Auto Train, all luggage is in the back of the van, not hidden. Never had any problem. Always a good idea to keep valuables with you. Car door is unlocked and window down on driver side for convenience of the car movers. Photos above are great...

Trip report-MDW-EWR then silver service to and from Florida plus Brightline

Enjoyed the report Steve. Did the time share Hilton presentation in Orlando a few years ago. A good deal for us but no contract signed. Too old to start this now. Also best wishes on your becoming a principal. I also made that move after nine years of teaching history and government. Pros and...

Advice for Son and me traveling on the Crescent

Enjoyed our two trips on the Crescent. I like going through all the small towns along the route, history and architecture are very interesting. And yes, plenty of things to do in NOL without hanging out on Bourbon St. Enjoy your trip.
