    Ukrainian trains still running

If Ukraine holds on (keyword: if) and prevails, I suspect that there will be LOTS of redevelopment money in the form of foreign aid coming their way. What would get interesting is if the breakaway republics and Crimea keep the Soviet gauge while the rest of Ukraine switches.

    Trains in rural areas

As someone who is about to send a kid off to college just outside of Fargo, ND, I am not sure that the train is as vital as we think in many of these rural areas. The train only stops in Fargo at 2:18 AM and 3:24 AM, assuming it is running on time. When I spoke with staff on campus about the...

    Wrong kind of rail photography

Meh. The odds of this staged event encouraging copycat behavior are near zero. I have better things to get upset about.

USA Rail Pass on sale ($299 Jan 2023)

The expensive segment is the June 9th departure from Springfield to Fargo. We could also do Albany to Fargo. I just noticed that business class is cheaper than coach.

That rules out one direction. Thanks for catching that.

    The North South Connect

I did notice that there are a LOT of office buildings near South Station, but they aren't exactly far from the Downtown Crossing T station. Also, it had been about ten years since I spent time in the Seaport District. Holy cow has that area changed!

    The North South Connect

Does anyone know what all of the construction is for adjacent to South Station, just to the south side? I am assuming that it is a parking garage. We were in Boston this past weekend, and my impression is that, for Amtrak passengers, there just aren't nearly enough passengers connecting...

    Trains in rural areas

I live in a rural area. My nearest Amtrak station is an hour away. The reality is that most people who live in my area don't even think of riding Amtrak. Those who ride Amtrak tend to be going to major urban areas and have a fear of driving in those places. Trips that are much more than a...

USA Rail Pass on sale ($299 Jan 2023)

My son is looking at a June trip from Springfield, MA to Fargo, ND and return. It is pricing out $612 in coach. It looks like he could just purchase the pass and take the trip for $399.

Ferries, Ferries, and still more Ferries

A video termination such as this is painful to watch - and seems so cold. There has got to be a better way. However, the company is absolutely bleeding money. I'm not sure what you want the executives "arrested" for.

Amtrak considering shifting Credit-Card Portfolio away from BofA

Not Amtrak, but I have an interesting experience with a carrier that switched credit card companies. I had a flyer from a flight that I took a few months ago to sign up for an Barclay's American Airline credit card. I learned here that the flight attendant gets $100 if I sign up, so I followed...

    Ethan Allen schedule change

If you can afford it, you really want to stay in downtown Burlington. There is quite a bit of charm downtown with the lakefront, the University of Vermont, and Church Street (a pedestrian-only street). The suburbs are your typical generic suburbs, with chain restaurants, stores, etc...

Earn 5X Points Promo with AGR Credit Card

I got this offer. I just purchased $900 worth of airfare on the AGR card to get my bonus points. I had not been using the AGR card for a while because I have switched to the Capital One Venture X.

    Ethan Allen schedule change

There are cheaper hotel options outside of downtown, but everything is fairly expensive in the summer.

Resumption of Amtrak service to Canada (2022-2023 Q2)

The problem for me is that, unless I want to travel and pay a lot of money, there is not a local testing source that can reliably guarantee a test result in 72 hours. This makes it difficult to commit to hotels since the cancellation window closes before you know if your test result will be in...

Resumption of Amtrak service to Canada (2022-2023 Q2)

A source that has been very reliable in the past tells me that the testing requirement for entry into Canada will be abolished altogether starting on March 31st. They say that an announcement will be made very soon. We shall see...

Auto Train: Why not more routes?

Just because an idea was bad fifty years ago does not mean that it is a bad idea now. But it's academic since the track isn't up to the task.

    Chicago

I love Portillo's. So much that, shortly after they went public a few months ago, I bought a share at $41 just for kicks. Thank goodness I only bought one share because that share is now worth about $24.
