Efficacy of Private vs. Public Sector Construction Projects

Your statement is clear that you think the private sector is better at it than the public sector, and there is no evidence of that. That somehow it would be better if the private sector were involved in public works projects (forgetting that they already are, all public projects use private...

Efficacy of Private vs. Public Sector Construction Projects

The whole idea that private sector builds with amazing efficiency and the public sector can't build anything on time or on budget is such a stupid myth.

    Northampton to Montreal?

It's really sad that in this country is continues to get harder and harder to get places without a car.

    Chicago transit help

I know, that's what pisses me off. No smart phone and a weekend pass costs you $14 instead of $10.

    Chicago transit help

What sucks is Metra changed it so you can't buy the $10 weekend pass on paper anymore, only available through the Ventra app. That seems discriminatory to me, those who don't own a smart phone can't get the discount fare. Same goes for the weekday passes they've introduced.

    Business or Coach

Using business class out of Chicago is great for being able to use and board from the Metropolitan Lounge. So much better boarding experience than the line-up walk. Most of my trips out of there are for taking the IL Zephyr/Carl Sandburg and on that business class you get 2x1 seating in half the...

St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago (TCMC) second daily service

I know the Illini/Saluki trains use Superliners but I'm not aware of any other corridor trains out of Chicago that use them regularly.

    New Illinois service

Although going to Macomb or Quincy on the Zephyr is always faster than driving from Chicago, unless you drive at 2:00 in the morning and speed without any stops..

    Who is drawn to flying?

To clarify, I didn't say it was something that started recently (since I flew it a few years ago I'm well aware of LH's 747 on the ORD-FRA route), just pointing out it was a route I knew about that still ran a 747 on it out of ORD, which has lost several 747 flights in recent years, like KLM's...

    Who is drawn to flying?

While doing some preliminary planning for a potential trip to Germany this summer I noticed that Lufthansa is using a 747-800 for one of their ORD-FRA flights.

    Who is drawn to flying?

One of my favorite planes to fly in recent years was Lufthansa's A340-600 that they flew on the ORD-MUC route. They have a layout that has a group of five bathrooms downstairs surrounding a small room (and the access to the crew quarters seems to be down there too. It is a great space for...

    Who is drawn to flying?

They just sold Air India back to the Tata family earlier this year (or last year) right?

    Are truck drivers under qualified?

I guess I'm curious about this image of truck drivers in the past being the great "knights of the road" excellent drivers. I think it's myth myself. My mother was in shipping for a meat packing company for years when I was a kid and she knew all the truck drivers who ran shipments to/from her...

    Are truck drivers under qualified?

I think underqualified describes almost every driver on the road. Nobody drives the way you are taught in drivers' ed, whether it be gunning it to "beat the red" (and usually you end up having to stop at the next red anyway), tailgating, or driving at excessive speed, among and so many other...

Amtrak: News Announcement for Amtrak Midwest Train Fleet

Do all of the cars on order go into revenue service in the first quarter, or just some of them? (I think it's 88 cars on the IDOT order if I'm remembering correctly).

Metra Ridership During Covid & Southland Reduced Fare Experiment

I disagree with you on their cherry picking, mostly. John was fairly circumspect when writing about polling data re: renaming Lake Shore Drive, but that was one thing. I think they do an honest assessment of data. I don't think this article really disagrees with what you just said, picking up...

Metra Ridership During Covid & Southland Reduced Fare Experiment

Why would they? The article is about ridership, not the labor dispute. They have mentioned rumblings of a potential strike in the last few weeks but there really isn't any new news on that front right now. The fare reduction has been fantastic as far as I'm concerned. It would be better if they...

    LIRR Question

I second that suggestion if you are looking for a cool ride rather than speed, I love taking the J/Z across the bridge and you get to go through a lot of neighborhood elevated.
