how do you wake up if your train arrives around 4AM?

Actually, yes, it tends to. It's more of a "wake up X hours from now" Most people apparently sleep in approximately 90 minute cycles, so I tend to try to schedule my sleeping as such. It does tend to help a bit.

how do you wake up if your train arrives around 4AM?

As others have pointed out, the policy is the conductor or assistant conductor should wake you up? In my experience this is true. But I am also excellent at having an internal alarm clock so always wake myself up, even if I don't want to. It's sort of a curse.

Viewliner II - Part 1 - Initial Production and Delivery

Ayup, and most likely if/when they get them to 125MPH on the NEC, it'll be really more to help with timekeeping. It's not going to make a huge difference for an LD train if you save a few minutes on the schedule, but it will help if you can pad the schedule so that it (and others) don't get...

Viewliner II - Part 1 - Initial Production and Delivery

Unless the cars move this week to Hialeah, I simply can't believe any will be in service by late August (ok, perhaps August 31st...) Even September I think is a stretch. My guess. September 15th at the earliest and more likely October 1st. Then come December we'll find some cold weather...

Modified Dining Car Service on Lake Shore Limited Effective 7/20/16

Ridership declining? Over 2014, yeah 2015 was down, but for a variety of reasons and I can almost guarantee the diners had nothing to do with that. The lack of diners does suck. No doubt about it. But I can't imagine that Amtrak isn't riding herd on CAF, but there's only so much that can be...

Auto train or Sliver service, need advice

If you mean new baggage cars yes. New diners or sleepers? Not delivered yet. If you mean new coaches, not even ordered yet.

Article on Penn Station's ClubAcela Lounge (from AtlasObscura.com)

Given he didn't get past the front desk and obviously didn't, for whatever reason, ask to take photos, he really didn't have any of his own to present. That said it is one of the weaker Atlas Obscura articles I've seen.

Is Acela worth the extra cost if I'm not in a hurry?

If I can afford to ride Acela First class, I take it every time hand's down. That said, I rarely could justify it. But it's OH SO MUCH NICER than Regional, business or coach.

    Questions on the Cascades

Yeah, definitely shut down roaming before you get to the border. It's not like radio waves know to stop directly at the border :-)

    Question about Amtrak E-Tickets

Yes, you can use a PDF viewer to display your eticket. I've done that many times. That said, as others have said, generally you can just give the conductor your name and they can check you off.

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2012-1Q 2024)

No money in the budget at this time, so no And any money they did free up would probably be to extend the Viewliner II contract or start work on procuring Amfleet II replacements

Mother with 5 kids kicked off Amtrak in middle of night

Given this mother was apparently doing it on the cheap, I don't think such an option would have helped.

    crescent NOL-NYP

I have to agree. When I do my ATL-NYP on the Crescent on an annual basis, I always enjoy breakfast in Virginia. It's beautiful.

    Union Station DC

Unless things have changed, you need tickets for the Washington Monument and they typically "sell" (they're actually free) out by like 9:00 AM. (you get a ticket for a specific 1/2 hour.)

    Union Station DC

If you only have 5 hours, keep in mind that something like the Air and Space Museum can easily consume an 8 hour day! (actually pretty much any of the museums can!) So plan accordingly. And keep in mind transit time. (contrary to what one may think, the "Smithsonian" stop on the Metro often is...

    Boarding in Wilmington vs. Baltimore

I' ve never been in the Baltimore Station, but will say I do like Wilmington Station. So that's my vote.

Viewliner II - Part 1 - Initial Production and Delivery

Sure, but that's akin to not being able to take possession of your house until you pay for it. Meanwhile your monthly rent payments are higher than the final payment and mortgage payments will be. Are you going to be withholding that final payment so you can keep paying rent on an apartment...

Microwaved cheeseburgers and hot dogs in cafe?

Ayup. A simple thing. Took a few more seconds, but honestly, not that many and the difference was quite notable. And yeah, using the convection oven for pizza would be so much better. It's a shame that the nuker has become pretty much the only tool. :-(

Microwaved cheeseburgers and hot dogs in cafe?

I just wish the small oven next to the microwave was used. I've seen it used twice. Once was with a meatball sub. The attendant separated the meatballs from the bun and nuked the meatballs. Meanwhile he then toasted the bun in the oven. Reassembled, put the cheese back on, nuked a few more...
