Provide and Raleigh is what some are guessing.

Amtrak ending BC on AT and Crescent May 1st

BC on the Crescent the one time I took it was worth it. Definitely quieter and more room. That said, a 2+1 would have been far more preferable. Or include meals. It wasn't a great upsell, but was nice. I'll miss it, but won't mourn it.

Amenities that have disappeared from Amtrak

Whining about a flower? I didn't read that as a whine as much as an example of a tiny detail that didn't cost much, added a nice touch of class and yet is gone. That said, the thing I miss on Empire Service trains (beside the cafe entirely!) is you could ask for a little package of lettuce and...

    Roomette upper bunk?

On the Superliner, there's no real advantage since it just tilts up out of the way. For the Viewliner, I have definitely given myself a 2 room "apartment" with office, bathroom and upper bedroom by keeping the upper bunk down. But I will often put it in the 1/2 down position, made up, so I can...

Planning a LSL Trip - Recommendations Appreciated

I'm a huge fan of the LSL and from Erie, if it were cheap enough would spring for a roomette, if only to nap a bit. Last year I road the LSL for the first time in over a decade. The first round trip, honestly, the food in the diner-lite was horrible. BUT, on the one way trip later in the year...

Two roomettes? My understanding is one roomette was replaced with 2 bathrooms.

Emp Serv to GCT, LSL NYP Suspended, Other NYP Changes 2018

So if I'm following the logic here... because a 100-200 passengers a day may be forced to change trains in ALB, Amtrak should scuttle this plan and more inconvience the 1000s of commuters going in and out of NYP every day. And as has been pointed out, some of the work is to be done on the...

Emp Serv to GCT, LSL NYP Suspended, Other NYP Changes 2018

That is true. I can safely say I've never seen anyone, including myself, ride the Empire Builder! :-)

Emp Serv to GCT, LSL NYP Suspended, Other NYP Changes 2018

BTW... unless you want all your passengers taking a pretty long walk... ALB can't do Superliners anymore (I mean in theory it could, but it'll be a walk along the brand new high-level platform to a ramp to the cars). And again, this is all mental masturbation.

    Winter Storm Riley 3/2/18

What Ryan said. Winter storm names are purely a marketing thing. For tropical/hurricanes, the status does matter (as folks here in upstate NY found when Irene flooded them, but wasn't a hurricane in status. They were outside flood zones, so no flood insurance, and since it wasn't a hurricane...

Emp Serv to GCT, LSL NYP Suspended, Other NYP Changes 2018

Wow... I didn't realize this was the end of the world. Seriously folks, you realize that the Boston Section has routinely had to change trains at Albany and... no one died. Is it inconvenient? Sure. It's also inconvenient in the reverse.... i.e. folks in Albany who want to take say the Silver...

Viewliner II Part 2: Dining Car Production, Delivery, Speculation

Almost certainly the latter. Folks, it's pretty common for entire trainsets to be swapped out for other service. There's really nothing all that magical, other than the first few trips being on the Meteor for the reason mentioned above.

Putting the beds down in the day or earlier

If it's the upper bunk on the Viewliner, I often do it myself, especially the times that the SCA appears to be impossible to find ( I think one time I waited for an hour before giving up). The lower bunk, with the seats, I let them do it.

BTW, just had 68013 Hartford on the Crescent 20(25). And I believe on 19(22) was 68006 Charleston.

110 mph operation on the Empire Corridor

You know, almost 20 miles of 110mph running isn't bad. As I recall there would be more, but there's at least one grade crossing NYS hasn't been able to close yet. I must say, I do enjoy me some 110mph running!

I can wait for a diner on the LSL until as neroden suggests, they can completely eliminate ALL heritage diners. Let's make life easier.

Food Preparation on Long Distance Trains

Fresh eggs are amazing. I've started to work on my fried eggs and omelettes and finding how poorly I've cooked them in the past!

Viewliner II Part 2: Dining Car Production, Delivery, Speculation

There are apparently some routes where a baggage car is overkill, such as LSL where you probably don't need TWO full baggage cars. So having a baggage/dorm gets you a baggage car for the NYP-ALB leg and frees up sleeper space. One real advantage of a baggage/dorm is the crew can be fully...

Viewliner II Part 2: Dining Car Production, Delivery, Speculation

My completely unofficial understanding is that Albany will be among the last to be delivered. The problems found were deep enough it was considered easier to fix them in the ones that weren't fully assembled and then go back and do major rework on Albany. In either case, there's no huge rush...
