I'm not holding my breath, but definitely sounds hopeful.
For a small state, VT seems to punch above its weight for train service.
And if the Vermonter ends up extending to Montreal, it'll be really impressive.
The only way Amtrak will get a major expansion done is if it had a lot more equipment. They've gotten creative with expansion, but they really are hitting the limits of what they can do.
Advertising is not a bad idea, but let's get more equipment first.
As mentioned, there was sort of a bilevel order, the state one that among other things would replace a bunch of Horizon cars. But, unfortunately, that order seems completely fubar.
So, it wouldn't have really added to the Superliner fleet per se, but would have given Amtrak more equipment and...
Let's agree that Amtrak needs to order a LOT of equipment, but right now, the only stuff on order that will carry passengers is the new Acela II trainsets and Viewliners.
The bi-level order is a mess and we can't count on that for anything for at least 1-2 years, if ever.
And the Viewliners...
You know, it's the first time I've heard that idea (converting cafe-lounges) to coaches, which makes sense.
So great, now you have enough for one more train. It's a start but...
Most of the equipment Amtrak probably needs are coaches.
As for diners, figure 4 for Silver Meteor, 4 for Crescent, 3 for Lake Shore Limited. That's 12.
If you add in 4 more for a returned Silver Star, you're up to 16.
Even if you assume 3-4 for spares (which is lousy utilization) that's 20...
Sure, as soon as Amtrak can come up with the money. :-/
There was the option for 30 more cars, but zero word that Amtrak ever (or will ever) exercise it.
I think it would be great if they could, but then the question is, to what point?
How much longer could they make existing trains? (keep in...
As that list shows, even small towns could have Union Stations. Canaan CT is a fairly small town (only a few thousand residents) and has never had Amtrak service.
Man, that does sound horrible. Fortunately I've had better breakfasts. Generally the potatoes are one of my favorite items, but I've seen some not so good ones too.
I'd definitely complain.
Which situation? The fairly inconsistent service? Sorry, that's entirely on Amtrak. Yes, late, delayed trains can sometimes be blamed on the host railroads or lack of money, but the inconsistent customer service? That's entirely on Amtrak.
I've got to admit, I'm not generally a huge fan of the quiet car. I actually like a bit of background noise. And every once in a great while in the quiet car you get the one patron who thinks it's their job to police everyone.
On the other hand, every once in awhile, it's a godsend!
