Evaluation of Route Performance in FY2011

Between a given city pair, Surfliners charge a flat fare, with a few exceptions: Summer fares are higher than 3-season fares Holiday fares are higher than Summer fares Business Class (basically a reserved seat on an otherwise unreserved route) is available for an accommodation charge To...

Santa Ana, CA to San Diego, CA

Santa Ana is safe to park at. In addition to the surface lot on the north side, there's a 5 or 6 story structure on the south side, and all of it is free. There's not much within walkable distance, so don't plan on getting there early and doing your own walking tour of Santa Ana. The San Diego...

Wi-Fi Update & OBS Improvement report

While it's encouraging to learn of all the work being done to improve OBS, it's sad to realize it literally took an act of Congress to make it happen.

    Ideal Laptop Size for Amtrak?

    MacBook Air. Or an iPad.

    Pacific Surfliner questions

It's a bit of a crap shoot on the Superliners. It's seems like every one has a different interior configuration: leg rests or not, tighter pitch or not, all seats facing center or not, carpeted overheads or not, etc. And it's not like it's either LD-spec or CA-spec, I've seen strange...

    Pacific Surfliner questions

I didn't say it was hard, I said it wasn't as easy. The Sheraton is across the street from Metro Center. The Biltmore is one block from Pershing Square. Both make it easier to get to the subway. You have other reasons for choosing Marriott, so do what you will.

    Pacific Surfliner questions

The Marriott is not as easily accessible to the subway that runs to Union Station. If you stay at the Sheraton instead (or the Biltmore), you'll have much easier access and won't have to rely on a cab to get you to/from LAUS.

Voice of Support for Amtrak in Senate

There's an interactive graphic from the NY Times that shows the sizes of different parts of the budget, and it also lets you separate out the discretionary spending. Locate the amount spent on all of railroading (I didn't see Amtrak broken out separately). It's miniscule. This is not an argument...

June Trains Magazine - Article regarding TSA and Amtrak

I'm still unclear: Did TSA require passengers to open their carry-ons? If so, did TSA stick hands into the opened carry-ons to move the contents around? Did the inspection include small items like purses and camera bags or only larger items like duffels and roll-ons? And, did you notice anyone...

That is good news. Can you give us any insight about how that one car came about?

What's the point of a spell checker when both variants are correct? Thupid English language! :giggle:

    new car design in California

Actually, there is a new seat design on some Surfliners, replacing the former Acela-type seats. I don't know if it's Amtrak or Caltrans behind the move. Subjectively, the pitch feels tighter, even though it's not (I can tell because the seats still align with the overhead lights, and the...

    Angel's flight

When you exit the subway at Pershing Square station, make sure you take the "exit to 4th Street" stairs to the mezzanine, not the "exit to Pershing Square" stairs. The mezzanine level ends in a T. Walk to the left and take the escalator to ground level. From there you can see Angels Flight and...

    LAUS Hotels/Motels

Since you're staying a couple of nights, I'd recommend you not stay at Metro Plaza. Aside from Chinatown, there's not much within walking distance. Instead, take the Red or Purple Lines to Pershing Square. The Biltmore is just across the square. You'll be in the heart of Downtown, and there's...

Steel Wheel Conference in LA Union Station - Anyone Going?

My dad will likely be glued to the television watching Glenn Beck spin his latest conspiracy theory. Probably something about George Soros secretly managing the choo-choo's at Amtrak because he hates freedom.

I'm a maybe. It's my dad's birthday that day, so depending on what the family decides to do I'll either have time :D or not :(

    Pacific Surfliner

The easiest way to remember is that the locomotive always faces away from LAX. This is true regardless of whether the run is north or south of the station.

    Amtrak Fare Comparisons

Interesting. Metrolink used to have weekend fares that were about 1/2 of weekday fares. I used to be able to travel from LAX to Santa Ana or Irvine for about $5 on the weekend. I hardly ever did it because weekend service is so sparse and Amtrak has the more convenient schedule, but it does...
