I would consider the 8:30 departure from Portland, arriving at South Station at 10:25. A slight delay on Route 95, and he is missing the Lake Shore. Personally, I'd just use the Orange Line transfer from the Downeaster. But, I live here :) I hope your son has an enjoyable trip. Mike

My concern with having a single thread per topic is that we may have a thread about the Downeaster, such as one on another forum, with almost 3700 posts. Trying to wade through, even after searching for something specific, just is not practical.

The early boarding time depends on when the yard returns the train to the station. On previous trips, I think we were escorted from the Lounge to the LSL between 8:00 and 8:30, and enjoyed the wine/cider and cheese reception in the diner. Yes the Metropolitan Lounge is available for sleeper...

Yes :) It does not matter who owns the equipment or who owns the tracks.

I believe the defect detectors will sense any locomotives or cars passing over it. I'm not certain about hi-rail vehicles.

While my experience on the Alaska Marine Highway ferry was only a five hour journey from Prince Rupert to Ketchikan, I do agree with me_little_me. The crew was very pleasant and helpful. The scenery was amazing :)

DMK Burger Bar is about a 40 minute trip from Union Station. Walk over to Quincy/Wells, and take the Brown line to Wellington. Walk less than 1/4 mile to 2954 N Sheffield Ave. I'm hoping to try a burger here the next time I'm visiting Chicago. :) Mike
