    Amtrak vs. VIA Booking Process

Yes, it's like the Acela, but not quite as fast :) . Also, during my trip on the corridor the attendants started at one end of the car for the beverage orders, and the other end of the car for meals. So, if you're on the tail end of the meal orders, your choice is whatever is left. In other...

    Question about Boarding Amtrak trains

I've stayed only at the Crowne (formerly Brock) Plaza, which is not a budget hotel :) Maybe try hotels.com, or one of the other travel sites.... Mike

    Question about Boarding Amtrak trains

Welcome to the Forum. Only train 63, The Maple Leaf, crosses into Canada at Niagara Falls. So, you can reserve a seat to Niagara Falls, Ontario (NFS). Otherwise the Empire Service trains #281 and 283,from New York City, travel only as far as Niagara Falls, NY (NFL). From there you would have to...

    Favorite food on Amtrak?

My first choice for breakfast is the omelette with veggies and cheese, w/ sausage. For lunch, unless one of the specials sounds good, I'll go with the cheeseburger (w/ bacon if the kitchen is up to it). Occasionally, on a long trip, I'll opt for an item off the kids' menu, as the portion is...

Another Question About Superliner Upper Bunk

Betty, I hope you can work it out; I'm certain you will all enjoy the trip together. Sorry I didn't mention that I sleep on my side. So, as Railiner said, there is enough space to turn over, you just can't sit upright.

Another Question About Superliner Upper Bunk

Betty, if you propped the pillows up, you may be able to recline and read, but you really cannot sit up. My first time in the upper bunk on a Superliner was on my round the country trip in March. Once I managed to get up there, I actually laughed at how little space there is. After I settled in...

Lake shore limited boarding process in Chicago

This past Monday, I was told to return to the Met Lounge at 8:00PM. The sleeper passengers boarded shortly thereafter. In this instance, the conductor didn't collect the tickets in the lounge; the SCA did once onboard. Mike

    NTD in DC

I looked up and saw Grace hustling out the gate towards your Acela. Missed you, Alan. I waited a bit longer, then boarding began. Thanks again! Mike

    NTD in DC

I'm posting from the Met Lounge in CHI. Although 29 departed nearly an hour late, we arrived a few minutes early, a first for me and #29! Yesterday at WUS was a treat; seeing old friends, and making a few new ones :)The trains were great, too. I concur with the opinion about the lines. And...

WIL to WAS to connect to CL

There's nothing quite like being scolded by an Amtrak agent for being late to the gate, and having to run to make your train! (It's something I really want to avoid in the future)

    Canadian National - Marine Atlantic

Thanks for the info and photos! I didn't realize rail-car ferries were in service to Newfoundland,or that the rails on the island were narrow gauge. Mike

    ClubAcela

When you arrive in the CA, just show them your FC ticket stub, then advise the agent which train you're departing on. Then the agent will be sure to call your train when it's ready for boarding. While at the counter, you can ask for a red cap if needed. Mike

    Train museum in Union Illinois

I've traveled from Boston twice to visit the IRM, it is worth the 21 mile trip :) You are able to look in and around much of the equipment. Enjoy! Mike

    Strasburg Mini Gathering?

Not too far from Lancaster (LNC), PA. It's about 8 miles from Strasburg. The Strasburg Railroad is a great tourist line. When I last visited (too many years ago), I took a Keystone train from NY Penn, picked up a rental car in Lancaster, and was in Strasburg in no time. If you go, be sure to...
