Cell Phone Reception on Amtrak trains

Was on the Downeaster today with my wifi hotspot and had continuous coverage BOS-POR with Verizon, the data was 4G and faster speeds than any of the unsecured wifi connections I was in range of over the weekend, and bothered to check...

Cato at Liberty challenging Brooke's report about AMTRAK finances

The highways buses ride on receive large subsidies... and their stations are operated by municipalities... yes?

Your reports and videos from Agency are cool. I hope you get to ride the Zephyr now and then!

    Amtrak in a Different Perspective

Their loss. Back inthe golden age, there was not much radio, no internet, no minimum wage, and no Greyhound. :)

    Amtrak in a Different Perspective

I appreciate your perspective. It truly was a complete system and served the existing population well (again, from my limited knowledge). Alas, life is different now and nothing much we can do about it.

    Amtrak in a Different Perspective

It's successful for me: I buy a ticket, it gets me there, and I have a good time. Better than flying.

Internet Conectivity on a Rural Amtrak route now Possible

I hear that Peter... train time for me is looking out at scenery you never see anywhere else, and meeting people you never run into anywhere else. And I love it!

    Amtrak in a Different Perspective

Nice post. I don't really know much of the history of "The Golden Age", but somehow always picture a bunch of fat-cat industrialists in their private cars. I am sure there were coach passengers back then too... but one never hears much about them. Today, the large majority of riders are in coach...

View E-ticket in Android using Kingsoft Office

I recently got a free Android App called Kingsoft Office, which I like a lot for word processing. I just made a reservation on the Downeaster for Saturday, and when the eticket arrived I clicked to download it, and it gave me the option of using Kingsoft to view it, which I selected, and there...

    First Train Experience (Empire Builder)

Towels are provided, yes. They are usually right there at the shower... but now and then it is necessary to ask the car attendant where they are, they might be stored in an unused roomette.

Who in the world are you?

With all due respect to everyone involved (including me) I think that to follow the "high road" here, the forum, and all of us, are best served by letting this one go completely. Peace to you all.

    Card Security

Michigan Mom: I too use ignore... but not to "get back" at the person, as in : "Don't lecture or preach to me as Sorcha did, or if you do, just know that will result in your being ignored. " It's more like, to keep myself from the feelings I get when I am annoyed - sometimes at a poster, and...

Complete utter newbie just looking for ideas/direction

I have seen lots of people editing audio on the train in coach seats. I sometimes peer over their shoulder to see what kind of software and how many tracks they are working with (I use Adobe Audition). Most if not all trains have a cafe car with better tables for working on than the fold-down...

Internet Conectivity on a Rural Amtrak route now Possible

Peter your words and diagrams evoke memories of my former days as a ham... My best antenna ever was a pair of phased quarter-wave verticals on the 40m meter band... home-made from two damaged aluminum sailboat masts... I was talking to guys in the South Pacific the rest of the stateside guys...

Live Chat every Sunday, 7PM Eastern

Well - don't be shy about logging on earlier than 7 Eastern... the server is up 24/7. As far as I can see, 7 pm Sundays is when there is most likely to be a group... but there is no rule against any other time. I find it easier to participate when there are fewer people who all know each...
