    Meals in the room?

I don't think there is any good solution here to avoid tipping. Not having the cash to tip, does not by itself, give one permission to stiff the person of their due tip. In this case, whether you eat in your room or eat in the dining car, you still need to tip someone (either the SCA or the...

    East coast February travel?

Unfortunately, no. Even a "reserved seat" isn't really a seat reserved just for you. Even if someone could, there is also some chance that your car will be flipped around in the consist, so if that happened, your seat would be on the other side. ;) Regardless, you might be able to choose a...

New dining options (flex dining) effective October 1, 2019

One has to admit, upgrading from box wine to jug wine, is a welcome improvement. ;) Now, we know the real truth as to why they moved the toilets out of the VL-II roomettes! Step one to VL pay toilets.

    Penn Station H Accessible-Need advice

Been post op myself, and remember what the 2 mile trip home was like. And having my kid be post op, and the 75 mile trip back home, 99% on a new-ish interstate highway. I can say I shutter thinking of someone, anyone, going from NYC to FL on a train after surgery. Nothing against Amtrak...

Click on the Autotrain, and it appears that all of its food links, are dead links. I also find it funny that their "Haagen-Dazs Vanilla Bean Ice Cream" is made with a "Blue Bunny Brand prescooped ice cream ball".

New dining options (flex dining) effective October 1, 2019

That certainly sounds like the beginning of a very good idea, but in looking at those menus, that's not the type of pre-prepared meals I want. For breakfast, I am a pancake or RR French toast type of person, and not so much into spinach omelets and goat cheese crepes. Likewise for dinner...

Auto Train Coach Food Being Removed 1/14/2020?

One of the problems is that the tax payers who will be subsidizing that new express Amtrak train, will complain loudly to their congressional representatives if their town is bypassed. Its like many high speed train proposals. Yea, it is high speed until it has to stop every 5 miles.

At least to me, its nothing but a hidden perk. I think back on the few Amtrak ads I have seen. They all focus on the western scenery that might be outside your train car window. I have never seen an Amtrak ad that focused on the "first class" experience of Sleeper class on the LD...

    The Boeing MAX 8 Accidents

When airlines buy "regional jets", they don't have any choices when it comes to interior seating configuration, like they do with the larger jets?

    coolers

At least from my experience, the SCA was issued only one bag of ice, from which they need to serve everyone's needs. Under those circumstances, asking or expecting the SCA to fill up your cooler might cross the line into being an unreasonable request.

    coolers

Even coming from the right direction, there have been times when I've been questioned, and I could not remember my car/room number (they don't accept replies like "1 car back, room right after the shower"), and certainly not my attendant's name (never say "George" even if true).

Are Amtrak employees permitted to use medical marijuana?

I would venture a guess that part of this is, depending on your Amtrak job, that you can be physically in more than state in any given day. Amtrak needs to adopt what are the most restrictive laws.

Dreaming of a first class experience

Wasn't there, a few years ago, a private company (GrandLuxe Rail Journeys?) that would stick their high-end sleeper/lounge cars onto Amtrak's Silvers, running up and down the east coast? It didn't work for them, financially, and it quickly ended. I doubt it would ever work, for anyone else.

    How safe are America's railroads?

OK, what is the survival rate for a plane crash vs. a train crash. When I think of a plane crash, I envision it falling straight into the ground from 40K feet.    When I think of a train crash, I envision the engine striking a SmartCar at a RR crossing.

    How safe are America's railroads?

Comes down to which is better?     Having the pilot come on the PA, telling you that all of the plane's engines have failed.     Or having the conductor come on the PA, telling your that all of the train's engines have failed. I still think of TWA flight 800.    The front end of the plane...

    Silver Star On-Time Performance

Is this a guaranteed connection? As to the comment about taking the Meteor, I would agree.  The earlier one arrives in PHL, the more options become available, even if actual arrival is later in the day.

    How safe are America's railroads?

The general public doesn't analyze what he said, to that degree.    The issue I have, is that the entire story, for which he was a major "witness", clearly leaves the viewer feeling that Amtrak is the one that is solely GUILTY on all counts !  :angry2: Yea, the people here understand that LD...

    How safe are America's railroads?

I have to agree.   With this ratings stunt, IMHO, Lesley Staht not only destroyed her own creditability, but also the credibility of her peers on 60 Minutes.  I will never view any report on 60 Minutes quite the same way again.

    Solari Board at PHL

I am surprised that "graffiti" teens even know what chalk is, or how it works, let alone carry around a piece.   :D

    Coast Starlight gets stormed out

Does the clock run, if the relief crew are themselves not working (simply are passengers on the helicopter heading to the stranded train)? Also, if Amtrak offered $1M cash bonus to any qualified crew to step up and help, you are saying there would be no takers?
