Short-Term Baggage Storage at NY Penn Station

I wish I'd known this last year. Asked several different people in Penn and they said there was no day-checking in Penn or Grand Central.

    BoardingBonus

That's probably it. My last trip was in February, and my last trip that I actually needed to take was last summer....on the opposite coast. Only problem with RNO-TRU points runs is that 5 is running so late these days I'll end up on a Capitol Corridor bus to TRU. Oh well.

    Questions about Tracking Trains

How locked-in, daywise, is that Salt Lake hotel room? You might see if you can move it to the next day, since the Zephyr isn't likely to be less than several hours late into SLC both days-this way you use it on the second night, waiting there for your Zephyr to Emeryville that most likely won't...

    #14 pulled by switchers?

It's rather confusing that there's both a locomotive and an airplane called the Dash 8....though it's fairly obvious which is meant in this context. *mental image of train being pulled by airplanes*

    Taxi stand at Reno station

At this time the only casino that's right on the tracks by the station is Harrah's, which is right across Commercial Row. Fitzgerald's is shuttered and being turned into something else, the Golden Phoenix (nee Flamingo) closed (the hotel building was completely remodeled and turned into condos)...

    BoardingBonus

Got an email today offering double points through September, promotion called BoardingBonus. Anyone else get this? It's prefaced with "We haven't seen you on board in a while" so maybe it's for relatively inactive riders. Reno-Truckee points runs, go!

    Taxi stand at Reno station

Tuesdays are quite slow around here, arrivals wise. That could either mean there aren't any cabs at the station, or that the 1-2 likely sitting there will still be available-since I don't drive on that day I'm not sure how it looks. If there's not one, call either 322-2222 for Whittlesea Checker...

    Taxi stand at Reno station

You're asking in the right place-I'm a Reno cab driver on the weekends. You don't have to call one-it's legal to hail off the street here-but except around the casinos, the only way to realistically get one is by calling. There's usually a 2-4 of them meeting both trains, even if they're late...

    Question about San Fran-CZ

There's a lot of variables there. How many people would be traveling, and do you plan on checking luggage on the train? If you plan to check luggage on the train, and you have more than two people: Fly into Oakland, and take a taxi to the Emeryville train station. Make sure they know to go to...

    Desertxpress Record of Decision

As initially planned, DesertXpress is clearly designed almost entirely for getting Californians into Vegas, not for Vegasinians (Vegasites? What do you call yourselves? Up here we're Renoites...) going to California. Hopefully they can work out something to Palmdale to connect with CaHSR or at...

    Crescent #19 route Qurestion

The Cardinal doesn't go to Greensboro.... if that's what you're riding, it transfers to the Crescent in Charlottesville, VA. Based on your schedule, though, it sounds like you mean the Carolinian, which does stop in Greensboro as well as Petersburg. In any case, yes, checked baggage is...

N.M. Rail Runner to lose weekend service

I've heard on here and other places that RailRunner is nonsensically inexpensive, which makes its farebox recovery horrible-did they look at raising fares as well? In other news, one of the infill stations is apparently moving forward...at a glacial pace: Link. Also of note in that link: Santa...

Link Your Amtrak and AGR Accounts

This also, inexplicably, raised my "profile completeness" from 85% to 87%.

Link Your Amtrak and AGR Accounts

That's pretty cool. And apparently I was using different email addresses for AGR and Amtrak itself-it didn't like that. It looks like you can also log into AGR and link them from "My Profile" by putting in your Amtrak.com account ID.

    Giordano's

Whoa. I have family in Oak Brook-hence why I'm sometimes in Chicago. I'll definitely be trying it out then.

    Giordano's

When in Chicago I often go to Pizzeria Uno. It's become a small chain, but the original location on Ohio street doesn't act or feel like one. I'll have to sample this Giordano's next time I'm there.

    California on CS savings

Davis? That's highly random. Why not Sacramento?

    Slumbercoaches or sectional sleepers?

I rather like DP Robert's idea. The main issue with the current coach seats and roomettes is that they both work best if you've got two people traveling together.. In coach, sleeping next to someone you know-or especially a SO-is way easier than next to a stranger (i've lucked out on this; my...

Amtrak gets $562 million RRIF Loan for the ACS-64s

Won't having two of them make it a lot less likely a train gets stranded? How does an Acela do with only one power car? With all the talk about how overpowered they are for their size it seems like a power car going out wouldn't be horribly problematic. Or does one failing usually mean the other...

Amtrak LD Dining Car Rules on Electronic Devices

I'm pretty sure i WAS the weirdo at my table the last time I was in an Amtrak dining car...
