    Should I expect dinner?

Future Mrs. lyke99 and I will be boarding the Empire Builder at Winona, MN headed westbound this summer for our honeymoon. The train is scheduled there at 7:50pm. If it is running on-time, should we expect to be offered dinner? My understanding is that if so, the SCA will make a reservation...

    Empire Builder Cancellations Continue

If the troubles with the Empire Builder are attributable to the P42s, why not use the former "Pepsi Can" P32s during the winter months? BNSF runs a lot of engines of a roughly similar design in the northern plains. I do realize that most of the 18 P32s are used around the system for switching...

    Superliner Bedroom Question

Thanks to both of you. Funny you should mention "The Christmas Train," I received it in paperback for Christmas and figure I'll save it for my trip on the Empire Builder in June. :)

    Superliner Bedroom Question

I see by the "3D Tour" of the Superliner bedroom on the Amtrak website that there are reading lights on either end of the couch, which could be used by the person sleeping in the lower bunk at night. Are there reading lights for the upper bunk or near the armchair? Thanks in advance.

    Coast Starlight Question

The cars were likely coming to or from a maintenance facility out of the LA area. They also could be coming from or going to the factory for delivery or warranty work. If either of these is the case, Amtrak was earning a few extra dollars by moving them. Hope this helps. :)

    Auto Train Status

Good God - 23'' of snow is a lot to deal with. We had a foot in a storm less than two weeks ago here in southern Minnesota - that was plenty to deal with...and we're use to it. Of course, Lorton, VA has the luxury of most of that snow melting in a few days. :)

    Laptop onboard question

I haven't commented, but have been following this thread - glad to hear your son enjoyed his trip. Also glad to hear the Angus burger is good - that is something I haven't had a chance to try yet. :)

    On the road again!

Thanks everyone - I read the board every day, but only chime in when I have something significant to add. :)

    On the road again!

I've looked and looked, but can't seem to find "Member Amtrak Trips" anywhere. I'm sure it is hiding in plain sight. Any help would be appreciated. I'm taking a long trip next summer and would like to meet other members if they'll be on the same trains. :)

What can I do in Portland?

I'll second the recommendations of both Bridgeport Brew Pub - excellent beer and tasty food - and Powell's Books. I'll be spending some time at both of these places in early July. :)

    gathering day 2

[ we all left for dinner at the beer place. Which "beer place?" I have a soon-to-be brother-in-law in Boston and would be interested in checking it out.

    Amtrak changes website look

Looks good. I wish the reservation application could offer "flexible dates" or "+/- 1-3 days" options, though. :)

    Empire Builder Operation

I'm already booked for late June/early July. Winona, MN-PDX, PDX-SEA, SEA-Winona, MN. I'll be anxious to hear what you find on the Empire Builder. :)

Help and Hiawatha car on the 9/26 Empire Builder from Chicago (westbou

If the car was a round-end observation car, it is likely the Cedar Rapids owned by the group that runs the Milwaukee Road 261 steam locomotive. He is a link to their website information about the car. http://www.261.com/showcar.cfm?which=a5b66...72-e6ad92ead2ce I believe its Milwaukee Road...

When they lay the track for HSR?

Looking at the Trains Magazine website, it seems their next issue will have an article about electrification.

    Empire Builder

I'll be anxious to read a trip report. I am doing a WIN-PDX-SEA-WIN trip next summer.
