    Coast Starlight Train Numbers?

Interesting. I somehow thought it was going to turn out the_traveler was involved (e.g., that the penthouse suite was included only on the #12 and #13 trains).

    Compatible 3rd Rail Systems

While that seems odd, it merely reflects that, for many years, New York had two, then three, subway systems: first the IRT and BMT, then later the IND, which was compatible with the BMT. (PATH is a wholly separate critter.) Other subway systems in the world may have similar issues, however, with...

Skirts For Some Male Swedish Crew Members

What do those Swedes wear under their skirts? Swedish train driver Martin Akersten poses wearing a skirt in this May 31 2013 photo taken in Stockholm with his cell phone. Akersten says he and more than a dozen other drivers and conductors at the Roslagsbanan line in the Swedish capital have...

    Russian Railways: Billions for HSR?

My point about EIS's is not that they're good or bad per se, but rather that they are one part of a long bureaucratic process that takes years, sometimes decades, to complete--if it's ever completed at all. If someone seriously floated a proposal today to build a new HSR somewhere in the U.S...

Google says people driving their own cars is on the way out

Google Thinks That In 100 Years, People Will Marvel That We Ever Allowed Humans To Drive What a load of rubbish. There are literally tens of thousands of miles of roads in remote areas that are not precisely mapped by Google where human control of vehicles is and will be the only way that they...

    Compatible 3rd Rail Systems

All of this means that BART's rolling stock just about has to be specially built--and thus is more expensive. I believe most of its equipment has been in use from the start (though occasionally remodeled/upgraded).

SWC Misses Connection- Capitol Limited Sold Out -CHI-WAS on 6/5/13

With numbers like that, I'd expect there to be a few hookers in the vicinity--not that I'd expect anyone here to avail themselves of their services, of course. I take it nobody got "bustituted" to make the connection instead?

    Compatible 3rd Rail Systems

I know that BART equipment, which operates on what is sometimes called Indian gauge, i.e., 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in) wide track, would not be immediately compatible with most other subway/rapid transit/metro systems in the U.S., including the S.F. Muni.

Portland triMET MAX Red Line shimmy

I've noticed it more on light rail (MAX and S.F. Muni Metro) than on BART (which uses Indian gauge; perhaps that makes the difference).

    Russian Railways: Billions for HSR?

They want to have several lines up-and-running by 2018, just five years from now? In the U.S., mentioning a brand-new high-speed rail line today might mean the first environmental impact statement would be drafted by 2018.

    We’re Getting a New Streetcar!

IOW, while Seattle's studying, Portland's building. Seattle will probably never catch up with Portland as far as rail-based public transit is concerned.
