Illinois to lead 110mph Diesel procurement

It's as close to HSR as anyone here is likely to see in that neck of the woods in their lifetimes.

Why do Amtrak trains have to be so slow?

Communism vs. socialism: a distinction without much of a difference: Wikipedia. (Make of it what you will.) But I suppose this is really a topic for another day.

Column in Orlando Sentinel by Norman Mineta, former DOT secy

What's interesting about Mineta is that, although he was no friend of Amtrak, and he served in the Bush 43 administration, he was also a Democrat. He also served a few months in the Clinton administration as Commerce Secretary.

detroit passenger trains in the 60's and 70's

Would such a train name even be politically correct nowadays?

Why do Amtrak trains have to be so slow?

Government ownership = socialism. Socialism = the first giant step on the road to communism. Yes, many people think this way, and it's hard to tell them they're wrong.

Feynman discusses what keeps trains on the tracks

The rod connecting the two wheels is called an axle. BART's wheels are "flat," i.e., not conical, at least according to the BART article at Wikipedia (though there don't appear to be any sources verifying that assertion).

Amtrak Official: Jacksonville-Miami rail going to happen

I don't ever see the CC going over the Donner Pass to Reno. UP sends a lot of slow, heavy freights over the pass; I can't believe it would be too interested in having more passenger traffic on the line. Right now, it's a five-hour train trip. Although there are no nonstop or even direct flights...

    Why unpainted?

One of United Airlines' paint schemes: I seem to remember reading somewhere that a lot of pilots for United and/or other airlines didn't like this scheme, since the abundance of gray made the planes hard to see in the fog and rain. Amtrak paint scheme: This Amtrak paint scheme (from...

    Maricopa to Phoenix Service

Because it may be much easier to arrange transportation, either by bus or rental car, from Tucson than from Maricopa, even if the latter is much closer to Phoenix. Why did UP tear up its tracks west of Phoenix? Did it find it was not cost-effective to maintain them? If so, we have to remember...

If that's the case, they instead found out who couldn't get out of the way in time.

The "amtrak wedsite"? Is someone getting married or honeymooning on the train? Will the_traveler be invited?

New Talgos moving westward for testing

The only thing that I think looks a bit odd is seeing a conventional level baggage car in a train otherwise comprising Superliners.

Teenager dies playing chicken with Capitol Corridor train.

Actually, it is. Mind you, I'm not in favor of speaking ill of the dead, but I also make a distinction between someone who dies prematurely due to cancer or some other serious illness, an innocent victim who's shot to death, a passenger in a vehicle who's fatally injured in an accident, etc., on...
