So sorry to hear this. I will always remember the good times we all had with him at the gatherings !

First Trip on the Cascades - what a great train

He can’t mess them up, he’s only the contractor. Washington DOT calls the shots.

    Amtrak/Camping Sites

The Pacific Surfliner Grover City station is across from Pismo State Beach. Yosemite NP is served by San Joaquin Thruway Buses. Grand Canyon NP is also served by Thruway Bus from Flagstaff.

Woman suing over Empire Builder rape case

My government employer has layers and layers of managers. They mainly get in the way of work being done and do nothing but micromanage our attendance and break times.

Woman suing over Empire Builder rape case

Good thing it happened in Montana. In California, he would probably be out already.

    Texas High Speed Rail

More optimistic about this than the California project, which is likely to end up being some gold-plated grade separation improvements to San Joaquin service. Even more optimistic about the Florida project :-)

City of New Orleans train in jeopardy.

Canada and Australia are large peer countries. Both countries have corridors, but are down to one or two high-cost weekly long distance trains. Probably the future of Amtrak if there is bipartisan support of NEC liberals and the Tea Party to reduce costs.

    Pacific Parlour Car Temporary Withdrawal

Just saw four PPC sitting at 8th Street yard on my way to work in L.A. this morning. Hope they are on trains by the time I'm on 14 a week from today !

    New early morning surfliner san-slo

It wouldn't be a problem if there were some Metrolink departures on the busy OC Line between 4:50 and 5:45 pm. How many commuter railroads do that ? The two services should be combined for hourly base service, with additional trains during peak periods. They are already running a enough trains...

    Stations With Worst Locations

Stockton CA. Bad neighborhood. Nothing around. The Modesto and Madera stations aren't much better.

What makes a well located Amtrak station? Which stations well located

Fullerton CA is located in a suburban Downtown with a transportation center and plenty of long-term parking. Shops and restaurants are nearby. The only thing missing is a hotel !

Things OBS wish you would stop doing.

Make that two AU Members who've been on a PV trip. Have done several. Some of the trips posted on larail.com are quite reasonable.

    Long.distance trips faster than driving

My rule of thumb is "Faster than driving, slower than flying."

    No more printed system timetables

Just for the record, I am tech savvy and have a lot of "devices." Still prefer the printed National Timetable for planning trips, or when traveling. It has everything I need in one place. I can see changes and updates on my phone, if necessary. The amount of money saved is probably equal to one...

    No more printed system timetables

It's a PITA to have to download a bunch of individual TT's to plan a trip. Impossible with the spotty cell and WiFi service on-board. I always carry a National TT in my backpack on train trips. Amtrak is not an airline with all point-to-point trips. The National TT is a marketing tool. Most...
