    Viewliner Dining Car Mockup Photo

I'll pass judgment on the day I get to ride the real equipment. The reason? I was involved in the mock-ups of todays "comfort cabs" in the late 70's. The original mock up, developed by Boeing-Vertol in South Philly, had no grab irons, they wanted to put the toilet in back like the older GE's...

Orientation of Sleepers on the Crescent? (#20)

You'll be in the first revenue car right behind the baggage car. The #10 car is next, then the diner and lounge followed by the coaches.

Crying Shame the Sunset Doesn't Run East of NOL

Correctumundo....but the SP was flat broke and the UP saw a golden opportunity to snake their way in!

Crying Shame the Sunset Doesn't Run East of NOL

The UP rented 200 and 300 series engines from Amtrak trying to break up the log jam. The UP promised to only use them in high speed inter-modal service. We showed up for work one day and the night local had stolen our engines because his ran out of fuel. So...the dispatcher told the next...

Crying Shame the Sunset Doesn't Run East of NOL

Jis...if you take the population of New York and divide it by the number of visitors per year and then take Orlando's population and divide it by those coming to see the Mouse, Space Center, and all the other theme parks, I think you'll be skunked. The NEC is not the only piece of RR Amtrak...

    Scenic highlights on #21/ #2/ #20 (CHI-SAS-NOL-WAS)

About thirty minutes out of NOL on #2 you'll cross over the Huey Long Bridge. They are totally re-building the car lanes which are adjacent to the 2 track bridge. On the up river side is Avondale ship yards slated to close in 2013. The river rises 175 feet above mean high water in order for...

Then maybe we could open our own RR...at least there would some transparency BEFORE 5 o'clock...

Crying Shame the Sunset Doesn't Run East of NOL

No, not really...I was asked to hire out and bid on a one man extra board in Pensacola that was established to cover Pensacola to Jax and NOL. One of the three people in the cab was the guy who took the job and was breaking in(even though I love the beach I stayed put in NOL). The suits have no...

Crying Shame the Sunset Doesn't Run East of NOL

My point exactly~ if you were CEO of Amtrak would you chance another possible host RR meltdown or even worse~ 46 pax killed in the middle of the night? Amtrak's worse disaster in 40 years; and there are mutiple lift bridges and stationary bridges that the train runs over at night, many times in...

    Crescent Bedroom Questions

With the second row of windows I enjoy the upper bunk to watch the stars at night and peak out at the night time station stops.

Crying Shame the Sunset Doesn't Run East of NOL

Me thinks it is cheaper to put Friday's # 2 crew up in a French Quarter hotel, feed and pay them for THREE days than to run one train to stations that need ADA compliance (not hype about "we ain't got no stations")mountains of overtime and deadheads when crews are at a minimum and the bean...

Worst delay Amtrak has ever had?

I was one of the six pax on board. Train was 72' 33" late departing NOL and I got off in Winter Park 78'01" late. The equipment move didn't even make an on time departure on the turn back to NOL.

Crying Shame the Sunset Doesn't Run East of NOL

There is NOTHING wrong with the stations. Pensacola was a brand new facility and still stands as pretty as the day it was built. Gulfport and Biloxi are just waiting areas and served RR signal gangs; there never was an agent between NOL and Pensacola so I can't see how Amtrak has everyone biting...

Crying Shame the Sunset Doesn't Run East of NOL

Amtrak paid the CSXT a tighty sum for signalling and siding extensions before they turned the first wheel towards Florida. Station rehalitation ??? BALONEY~ Amtrak sold the Mobile depot and surrouding grounds to a developer and then grabbed a bull horn and told everybody they had no facilities...

Booster seats in dining car on Crescent?

Very good question. In all the years, including when the Crescent was run by the Southern, I have never seen a booster chair; and yes, there were days when we could have used one. I did see one mom prop baby up with a new Orleans phone book.

    SCA Performace

Now that you know this characters M.O. type up a sheet of what you want done and when. I, personally, would hand one to the conductor if the SCA fails to perform as instructed. Don't be unreasonable but things such as we would like turn down by 9 p.m. and we DO want a morning paper should be on...

    SCA Performace

Conductors and A/C are available for the entire length of your journey. You may have to find them. On Superliners they usually hang in the lounge section of the transistion car. It is downstairs and is really crew territory. On CCC equipped trains there is a growing trend for the operating crew...
