Amtrak train #2 now departing LAX at 3PM

On Friday we departed on #2 at 3:20 pm though scheduled departure time was 2:40. Reason given was need to switch locomotives.

    Roomette Allocation

I find it faster to send an email (about 30 seconds) than to call, wait on hold, and then have the discussion (2 minutes minimum. And I don't need the answer immediately, so getting it faster is not a benefit to me.

can you spend the night in la union station?

As long as you have a ticket, the police won't kick you out of the station. But you would do way better to spend a little and check into one of the hotels that have been mentioned.

    Roomette Allocation

Instead of calling, you can send Amtrak an email from the website and ask for your room assignment. I always get the answer within a day.

    Northbound Starlight questions ...

When is your trip? It appears that the schedule reverts to the old 10:15 am LAX departure as of MARCH 1, 2011. As for the lounge area, that is indeed the Traxx bar. I would think that Traxx would want that area operating as a bar during lunch time, rather than being used as the Amtrak lounge.

Other Amtrak Food Menus Now Up

Duck in the PPC was replaced with Creamy Lobster BIsque.

Other Amtrak Food Menus Now Up

I am sorry to see that they've eliminated the duck from the PPC menu. It was absolutely the best duck I've ever had anywhere.

Opinions on Los Angeles Union Station (LAX)?

I'm in and out of Union Station all the time, both on Amtrak, Metrolink and the Red, Purple and Orange Metro lines. With the usual cautions of keeping an eye on your things, it is totally safe at any time of the day or night. The surrounding area is totally safe during the day, and okay at...

    Coach Seating

You might also want to take some more substantial snacks, fruit, etc. -- buying stuff at the snack bar can get expensive in a hurry.

Any USPS drop boxes in Amtrak stations?

There is a mailbox at the station in Whitefish, Montana.

    parking at LA Union Station

The Gateway Garage primarily provides parking for the Metro office tower above it. It is mostly empty during non-business hours (nights and weekends), so you'll have no problems finding a space in the pre-dawn hours. Gateway Garage is the cheapest parking that I've been able to find around...

    EB eastbound from PDX

I was on the EB east out of PDX about 2 weeks ago. Had choice of several items -- I had salmon on greens with sidedishes. Other choices were chicken and I think roast beef. We took along a bottle of wine (screw top so no opener needed) and thoroughly enjoyed our meal as we went up the...

Sunset Ltd - San Antonio to New Orleans.

I'm planning a trip on the Sunset Limited from LAX to Houston in January, so I'll add my thanks for all the answers and help. In my case, the train arrives Houston (or I should say, is scheduled to arrive Houston) at 4:40 am. I'll have a couple hour wait until my wife arrives to pick me up...

    omaha to Emeryville, what next???

The Amtrak website has all the station addresses. Just click on the Station Tab, then California. The San Francisco stations (I think there are 4) are all listed -- just click on each one for its street address.

    omaha to Emeryville, what next???

San Francisco in early April is usually cool (50's), breezy and some chance of rain. You will almost definitely see snow in both the Rockies and the Sierras. One of the Amtrak Thruway bus stops in SF is at the Convention Center, also known as the Moscone Center.

Best food on the train that you had

I'm going to have to go with the duck in the PPC on the Coast Starlight, though the buffalo meatloaf on the Empire Builder is a very very close second.

    Place to Eat in Emeryville

There is a Peet's Coffee directly across the tracks from the station -- just go over the bridge and it is straight ahead across the parking lot. It opens early and has the usual assortment of muffins, pastries, yogurt, etc., as well as coffee and tea.

    No Roomette Assignment

If you book online thru the Amtrak website, your confirmation will not have your room assignment. However, you can then send an online message via the Amtrak website asking for your room assignment and you will receive an email with your assignment (usually within 24 hours).

Keeping the toilets clean on longer trips

Having just returned home after an extra-long (ie, delayed) trip on Empire Builder 8, I can testify that the sleeper common restrooms were pretty funky by the last day. One thing that would help is if a toilet brush was placed in each bathroom. Each passenger would hopefully utilize it to clean...

EB 28 dining car out of PDX?

I'm taking the Empire Builder next Monday from Portland to Chicago. Is there a dining car when the train leaves Portland? With departure at 4:45 pm, dinner should be soon after departure.
