First time rider questions (CL and SWC)

I spend most of a daytime trip in the lounge car. That is the nice thing about the Superliner lounge is the great amount of seating. On the single level trains in the east the lounge cars the seats are booth style seating and one set is always taken by the conductor for an office.

Six hours possibly in Washington D.C.&NYC

While on a six hour layover in NYC on a trip a few years ago, I walked over to Grand Central Terminal and had lunch. It is about a twelve block walk from Penn Central.

The 12 Best & Worst Cafe Items on Amtrak: from Thrillist.com

Some new items since my last ride. Sad to see no breakfast items made the list. They have the best cinnamon rolls. Another thing I noticed is the prices have gone up quite a bit.

    Overly detailed explanation by Conductor?

This is something that needs to happen more on Amtrak trains.

Legacy Club: New BC Lounge in CHI?

The only thing wrong with the Amtrak first class lounge is not enough wall outlet to charge electronic devices. Other wise I enjoy my time in there.

    Lockers at CUS

They are in the coach waiting room. Be aware they are not cheap.

    Diesel locomotives at NYP

For years the locomotives were FL9's. In the late 1990's there were replaced by a customized p42 with a diesel prime mover and third rail capacity.

Meal service on the eastbound Lake Shore Limited out of Chicago

No dinner device out of Chicago. It best to plan on eating before boarding. Breakfast starts around six between Erie and Buffalo. Lunch starts around 11 am. I not sure about the second question because I have only rode the LSL eastbound to Erie. The train is known as the late shore limited due...

    I have a need - a need for speed.

It take more then just PTC for the chief to run 90. BNSF has to keep the tracks to class 5 standards which is not cheap and does freight trains no good.

    Dinner on LSL

Like most trains the first setting is around five. The last time I road it, I choose the last setting at nine. The nice thing about that time was staying in the diner and talking with my table mates until 11. Enjoy the hertiage dinner, this might be the last year for it.

Southwest Chief and Promo Code Qs

The conductor of the train handles the boarding at middle of the night stops. Most of the time they load the coaches by destination. My home station is Newton, the next stop to the east of Hutchison. I live in Oklahoma and have to drive both ways in the late evening on the way out and early...

Southwest Chief 4(2) - Locomotive Failure?

Looks like another ride though Kansas during the day.

    Southwest chief-places to eat westbound

Most trips the Chief is at KC for about 15 to 20 minutes. You will have time to get off the train, but stay trainside. KC is a crew change point. Going into the station involves stairs or a elevator. Also the chief makes a stop after dark. Albuquerque is a both crew change point and also the 500...

SWC - How did this happen?

This happens almost every trip. Beside the padding, the SWC makes a lot of time up in Arizona with some 90 MPH running.

    ATC

ATC is outdated. Now Amtrak uses PTC.

    Solar panels

These panels control the doors on the bottom of the cars that dump ballast. They work a lot better then the older manual power doors and are a lot cleaner. The old ones a train crew member had to walk along side it and hold the doors open as the ballast dumped.
